Noney, November 05 2021: Normal life was badly affected in Noney and Tamenglong districts on Friday due to the imposition of a 24-hour total bandh along the NH-37 (Imphal Jiribam Road) by Affected Land Owners' Committee, Longmai (Noney district).
The bandh was called by the Committee demanding fair compensation and re-assessment of the process for acquisition of land by the government for construction and widening of NH-37 to double lane by NHIDCL.
Bandh supporters blocked the road and burned tyres in the middle of the road in many locations along with the highway stretch apart from shouting slogans like "we want fair compensation", "Our land our rights", "We demand re-assessment and resurveys", "No payment should be made without proper verification", etc.
During the bandh that began from midnight of November 4, the agitation supporters prohibited movement of all types of vehicles along NH-37 and Old Cachar road.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the ongoing bandh, Committee president Wilson Kamei recounted they had already submitted several representations to the government to look into the matter and intervene for fair compensation and rectify the lapses regarding the estimated amount before the disbursement of compensation money.
He contended that there is a big difference and inappropriate estimation amount as compared to the actual land, buildings and vegetation affected.
If the authority concerned still remains as mere spectators rather than solving the genuine demand, more intense agitations will follow with the help of like-minded individuals and organisations, he cautioned.
There is no report of any untoward incident till the time of filling this report.
It may be mentioned that the central government under the ministry of Road Transport and Highways had already more than Rs 400 crore for the payment of compensation to the project affected families.
