The Chandor village panchayat has decided to stop the collection of dry waste after fresh opposition to the new proposal to set up material recovery facility in the village.
The village panchayat had slated site inspection of the new plot which was voluntarily given to the panchayat to set up the facility. However, the residents of Cavorim strongly objected to the setting up of the MRF in their ward.
Bowing to pressure from the villagers, the land owner withdrew the consent given to the village panchayat. The villagers also submitted a memorandum to oppose the project.
Earlier in the day, residents of Igrejawaddo also objected to segregation of dry waste near the panchayat which has prompted the panchayat to initiate the process of shifting the garbage handling.
Sarpanch Edward Dasilva said that the panchayat will be left with no option but to stop dry waste collection in the village as it has no land available for segregation.
He said that a large number of villagers from Cavorim have objected to setting up of the MRF facility after it was resolved to inspect the site offered by a villager at special gram sabha. He said that bowing to pressure from the villagers, the resident has withdrawn his consent.
He said that he stands with the villagers even at the cost of risking his disqualification. But the panchayat will have no option but to stop garbage collection adding, “Hopefully we will be able to find a solution as everyone generates garbage.”
