Imphal, November 04 2021: Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur (PPCM) has urged the government and its departments concerned to look into the food items which are brought from outside and are being sold at various shops of the state.
Addressing a press meet held at PPGM's office in Wahengbam Leikai on Thursday, convenor Maibam Bisheshwore informed that the Committee had conducted a drive in connection with Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba festivals and found many shops selling food items without proper labels including MRP, manufacture and expiry dates.
During the drive, which was conducted since November 1, various food items which could be unsafe for human consumption were seized from several shops, he added.
As such, the convener urged the authority concerned to look into the matter, while appealing to the people to purchase food and other items produced in the state.
On Wednesday, PPCM volunteers conducted awareness programme and drive at several markets to check whether items were being sold at higher rates or without expiry date.
According to PPCM convenor publicity sub-committee Laikhuram Jayenta the awareness was conducted using loudspeakers not to hike prices of items and to sell in hygienic manner at Khwairamband Keithel, Paona market, Jhangal market, Lamlong mafket and along Wahengbam Leikai road.
The buyers were also informed about consumers' rights during the awareness programme, he added.
Jayenta said that many shops did not put up the price list of the items sold in front of the shop despite government order.
The owners are doing whatever they want.
In addition to it, most of the shops did not update their license.
Shops selling goods beyond expiry date and in unhygienic manner were also detected during the drive, he claimed while urging authorities concerned to perform their duties sincerely.
