Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday claimed that the Assembly bypoll results show that “the honours are even” today between the BJP and the parties opposed to it.

In a series of tweets analysing the results of 30 Assembly seats across 14 States, Mr. Chidamabaram wondered which way “will the wind blow in the 2022 elections in various States”.

“Here is a thought-provoking analysis of the results of byelections — BJP won seven seats and its declared allies won eight seats. Congress won eight seats. Non-BJP parties won seven seats of which only one seat was won by a crypto ally of the BJP, namely YSR Congress. The other six seats were won by parties opposed to the BJP,” the former Finance Minister said.

“The honours are even today. Which way will the wind blow in 2022?”, Mr. Chidambaram said.

Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh are slated to have Assembly elections early next year.

Later in the year, around November-December 2022, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh would go to the polls.

Encouraged by the results, the Congress claimed that the voters had punished the Narendra Modi Government for its “arrogance over the three farm laws and petrol and diesel prices”.

“It’s Diwali and inflation is at its peak. It’s not a matter of joke. I wish the Modi Government had a sensitive heart for the public,” Mr. Gandhi tweeted.
