PUNJAB HAS POOR RANKING FOR FARMER PRODUCER COMPANIES

Northern Zone comprising Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, New Delhi, Punjab, and Rajasthan has only 664 Farmer Producer Companies (FPC) out of which Punjab has 101 FPCs.

Every journey starts with a single step, and Punjab hasn’t been able to take even the first step. This is in context with the development of Farmer Producer Companies in different states of India.

A recent study named Farmer Producer Companies (FPC) in India: An Overview by T. S. Senthil Nathan and N. Venkatesa Palanichamy published in the Current Journal of Applied Science and Technology indicates that Punjab stands at the lower end of this ladder of FPCs.

The Northern Zone—comprising Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, New Delhi, Punjab, and Rajasthan—has only 664 FPCs out of which Punjab has 101 FPCs. Whereas Sikkim is standing at the top of all the states to have maximum FPCs in the country. The number of farmers mobilized through FPCs by NABARD was highest in Sikkim with 122643 farmer members, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh with 109113 and 80616 farmer members respectively in each state.

The study says that the Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) have emerged as a solution to the problems that small and marginal farmers confront. This study probed into the reasons for the farmer-producer companies’ establishment, as stated in different policy documents and past literature. The performance of Farmers Producer Companies has improved significantly; however, the emergence of FPCs in India has not been consistent across the states. This paper examines the current status, geographical spread, and functions of Farmer’s Producer Companies (FPCs) across India, as well as suggests suitable measures to their performance.

The study indicated that a total of 6471 FPCs were formed, in which around 80 percent i.e. 5145 FPCs were promoted by Small Farmers Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC) and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), 1263 FPCs were promoted by the various state government and other agencies, and 63 of them were self-promoted.

More than 50 percent of the FPCs are set up in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Karnataka, Odisha, and Telangana. SFAC promoted a large number of FPCs in Madhya Pradesh (149 FPCs) and NABARD has promoted a large number of FPCs in Uttarakhand (362). The number of farmers mobilized through FPCs by SFAC and NABARD was highest in the state of Madhya Pradesh with 183517 farmer members, followed by Karnataka with 176732 farmer members.

Several factors influenced state performance, and this study also has suggested some strategies to overcome them to promote the growth of FPCs in India.

US BLACKLISTS NSO GROUP, MAKER OF PEGASUS SPYWARE

Published

on

The US added the Israeli spyware company NSO Group—Israeli technological firm and maker of the Pegasus software—to its “entity list,” a federal blacklist prohibiting the company from receiving some American technologies, reported The Washington Post.

The blacklisting came after determining the company’s phone-hacking tools had been used by foreign governments to “maliciously target government officials, journalists, business people, activists, academics, and embassy workers”. The action is part of the Biden administration’s “efforts to put human rights at the centre of US foreign policy, including by working to stem the proliferation of digital tools used for repression”, according to the US Commerce Department.

US Secretary of Commerce Gina M Raimondo said in a statement on Wednesday: “The United States is committed to aggressively using export controls to hold companies accountable that develop, traffic, or use technologies to conduct malicious activities that threaten the cybersecurity of members of civil society, dissidents, government officials, and organizations here and abroad.”

The move is a significant sanction against a company spotlighted in July by the global Pegasus Project consortium, including The Washington Post and 16 other news organisations worldwide. The consortium published dozens of articles detailing misuse of the Pegasus spyware by customers of NSO. The NSO Group has consistently denied the findings of the Pegasus Project, which found that some of NSO’s dozens of law enforcement, military and intelligence customers in more than 40 countries target journalists, politicians and human rights workers on a routine basis with Pegasus, which can hack into a victim’s cellphone. NSO has acknowledged problems with certain customers in the past, according to The Washington Post.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a Bangladeshi national on suspicion of being a Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terrorist, from Subhashgram in South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal. The man’s name is Abdul Mannan. Recently, some members of the banned terror outfit JMB were caught from Haridebpur in Kolkata. As per intelligence, Abdul Mannan had contacts with JMB. Detectives interrogated Abdul and found that he had entered the country from Bangladesh two years ago. A fake Aadhaar card was found from him.

The case relates to a conspiracy of online radicalisation and recruitment of vulnerable Muslim youth by JMB/AQIS in India and Bangladesh. NIA had registered the case on 06 August 2021. Till now, five have been arrested in this case. The arrested were involved in arranging fake Indian identity documents for the terrorists of JMB who had illegally entered India.

Arrested Abdul Mannan will be produced before the NIA special court. Investigators want to know more about JMB’s Kolkata module.

Investigators want to know when Abdul Mannan joined the organization, what his work was, and where he spread his branches. Detectives want to take Abdul Mannan into their custody to know how he came to India from Bangladesh and with whose help.

On 11 July, three suspected terrorists were arrested from Haridebpur. Investigators claim the JMB has linkswith them. The STF later arrested a suspected terrorist from Barasat. Eventually, on the instructions of the Union Home Ministry, the investigation into the arrests went to the NIA. It is to be mentioned that after the arrest of three suspected JMB terrorists of Bangladesh from the Haridebpur police station area, one shocking information after another has been coming. The most shocking information is that multiple leaflets in Bengali script were found from there in which it was said that bombs should be made in the kitchens of mothers in Bengal. Three youths had rented a house in Haridebpur, South Kolkata. They had been living in that house for about a year. They changed their names and introduced themselves as Indian citizens. The work of the arrested three JMB terrorists (Kolkata JMB) was to spread jihadi ideology through social media and radicalise the Muslim youth. Multiple mobile phones were used to run campaigns by opening fake accounts under different names. Investigators also found that the SIM cards were used with fake documents. Jihadi writing was posted through Facebook from a Facebook account named Sheikh Sabbir.
