Police condemn spate of Vic beach crime

Two men have been arrested after a man was stabbed in the face and a carload of women carjacked at knifepoint amid a spate of incidents near a popular Melbourne beach.

Five women were sitting in the parked car on Marine Parade in St Kilda late on Tuesday evening when a man jumped on the bonnet and began kicking the windscreen, police say.

Another man is said to have approached the driver and demanded the car while flashing a knife in his pants.

She exited the driver's seat and the other man punched one of the women in the head multiple times after jumping off the car.

The men were arrested after nearby officers heard the women screaming.

Both are being questioned by police and the assaulted woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Officers are investigating whether the carjacking is linked to an earlier stabbing at St Kilda beach, which left a 26-year-old Tarneit man with a face laceration.

More incidents were reported along the St Kilda foreshore as revellers enjoyed Melbourne's warm weather on the first public holiday since lockdown ended.

A 14-year-old girl was arrested over an affray, while several groups were broken up over the course of the day after displaying "anti-social behaviour".

Police say they won't tolerate those who are seeking "to break the law, detract from the good behaviour of others, and disrupt people who are simply trying to enjoy a day at the beach".

"While we never like to see this kind of behaviour on our beaches, we unfortunately know the likelihood of anti-social and criminal behaviour in these locations increases as the weather heats up and more people congregate," a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
