Class nine student designs anti-sleep device for drivers

Chinmaya told TOI that as a part of a competition, teachers had asked him to find a solution to a problem. “Since our school is located close to the Mangaluru- Bengaluru highway, we often witness accidents. When I was trying to understand why accidents take place, I realised that drowsy driving kills, but it is preventable. I started researching further on the internet. I watched several online videos and read about devices that are already available and discussed the same with my father. Under the guidance of my teachers, I spent nearly two months developing a low-cost device that can be placed on a spectacle frame,” he said.
He worked on this project along with his classmate Rithik Shetty and most of the materials were procured online. The device has been developed at a cost of Rs 1,000. There are no side effects and it can save the lives of drivers especially during the night, he says.
Chinmaya is the son of Chandrashekar Gowda, a businessman and agriculturist and Chethana Gowda, a homemaker residing in Shishila village in Belthangady taluk.
Chandrashekar said, “The device can be fine-tuned with industry support and released into the market. My son is still working on various other aspects. Like seat belts, if wearing anti-sleep devices is made mandatory, we will probably be able to save lives.”
Science teacher Pranavi B said the school is sending the device for a national science project competition. “Chinmaya has always been interested in developing unique science models. Before starting work on the model, he shared the project idea and the school encouraged him to take it forward. He kept informing us about the development at every stage and used to share videos for feedback,” she added.
