Great British Bake Off presenter Matt Lucas is now a German citizen and has dual nationality after branding Brexit 'pointless and masochistic'. 

The comic, 47, took to Instagram to reveal his new Anglo-German status and show off his gift from the embassy.

He shared a picture of a pin badge of the British and German flags and explained that he was offered citizenship due to his heritage.

Lucas previously caused a stir when he shared an anti-Brexit article published by The Guardian newspaper, branding London's deal with the European Union 'pointless and masochistic'.

On Tuesday, Lucas shared: 'My grandma fled Berlin in 1938. Having been offered citizenship, I have just been to the German Embassy in London to collect my Certificate of Naturalisation. 

'I am officially Anglo-German. They gave me some Gummibärchen and this lovely badge. Now to choose a German football team.' 

After also sharing the news on Twitter, Lucas revealed he had been 'claimed' by football team Union Berlin, after they welcomed him to the country in a post.

He said: 'I have been claimed by Union Berlin, it seems. My new German team, then!'

Lucas also responded to a fan who asked if he was now entitled to a German passport, to which he replied saying: 'yes'.

During a recent episode of Bake Off performed a version of The Flintstones in to German contestant Jürgen in his mother tounge.

Lucas quipped that he also sang the song - known as Feuersteins - at the German embassy.

The comedian did not comment on whether his decision to change his nationality was based on the Brexit vote.

He wrote: 'I'm a Remainer and I'm proud of the fact that Britain has a rich and varied racial and cultural mix.'

Acknowledging the impending backlash, he wrote: 'Cue more abuse.'

'Once we're out, we can continue to mix with the whole world and not just with the EU countries alone!'

A third explained that Brexiteers 'voted for change' and 'not to maintain the establishment and status quo'.
