LUCKNOW: A special crime branch unit of the Central Bureau of Investigation (
CBI) on Tuesday registered a case of murder against six cops—three named and three unidentified—in connection with the murder of Kanpur businessman Manish
Gupta.
The state government had appealed for CBI probe in the case on October 1. Those named in the FIR are-- inspector Jagat Narayan Singh, sub-inspectors Akshay Mishra and Vijay Yadav.
On September 27, Ramgarhtal inspector JN Singh, Phalmandi police post in charge sub-inspector (SI) Akshay Mishra, SI Vijay Yadav and three other cops had entered a hotel during a verification drive in Gorakhpur’s Ramgarhtal area and entered the room where Gupta was staying with Pradeep Chauhan and Hardeep Chauhan.
The cops had allegedly thrashed them during which Gupta died. The six cops were later suspended and booked under charges of murder.
The victim’s wife
Meenakshi had alleged foul play, citing postmortem examination report. She had claimed that her husband was killed because of police beating.
She had challenged the claim of the police, saying that the nature of injuries on Gupta’s body indicated he had not fallen off the bed as claimed by police.
Soon after the incident, all six cops had been absconding. An SIT headed by an additional commissioner of police
Kanpur Nagar was formed to probe the case. A cash reward of Rs 1 lakh was announced to nab the six cops.
