Justice D.Y. Chandrachud Talks About Dabur Ad, Says Awareness About Women’s Rights Should Be Created In Younger Men
Does anyone else remember the whole backlash Aamir Khan got over allegedly calling India intolerant and expressing his want to leave the country? While we are pretty diverse and have found a way to somehow live in one country together, I think it is far-fetched to claim that we do so harmoniously. Moreover, our current social climate does not allow a lot of room for progressive thoughts and beliefs. Luckily, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud seems to agree with me as he breaks his silence and talks about the recent controversies involving the same-sex Karwa Chauth ad by Dabur.
In case you’re unaware, last week Dabur was forced to withdraw a Karwa Chauth Ad featuring a same-sex female couple while tendering an apology for the same. The advertisement was not well-received and Dabur faced a lot of backlash from a lot of people on social media. Finally, the ad was taken down after Minister Narottam Mishra issued a warning to the brand to take down the “objectionable” advertisement or to face legal consequences.

Justice D.Y. Chandrachud spoke about the major disparity between the law and the needs and state of our current society at the nationwide launch of legal awareness programmes by NALSA while speaking on “Empowerment of Women through Legal Awareness.”

“Just two days ago all of you may have seen an advertisement of a company, which was required to be pulled down. It was an advertisement on Karva Chauth for same-sex couple, it had to be withdrawn on the ground of public intolerance. Our laws have rights for women, the Constitution recognises those rights,” said Justice D.Y. Chandrachud according to, DT Next.
He discussed the advertisement further while discussing why it is essential to enforce legal awareness regarding the rights of women. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said, “Our Constitution is a transformative document that sought to remedy the structural inequalities rooted in patriarchy. It has become a powerful tool to secure material entitlements and provide public affirmations of dignity and equality of women.”
While speaking at the event Justice D.Y. Chandrachud also said, “The Supreme Court has recently opened the doors for women to join the armed forces. But how does a woman access the armed forces? How does she become a member of the armed forces? How does she become a judicial officer? So legal awareness has to be spread about these avenues for women to enter the workplace.”
It is great that someone with a voice spoke about the intolerance displayed by our countrymen over the Dabur advertisement and is also trying to create awareness regarding women’s legal rights and opportunities for them in the workforce.
