Coronavirus Variants and Vaccinations, Coronavirus Active Cases in India Today’s News, November 2 Live Updates: It has been nearly two years since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world. The fight against Coronavirus is not over yet. Even as people around the world prepare for normalcy, there are reports that suggest the virus is resurging in several regions. Countries such as the US, UK, Russia, China, Singapore, Ukraine, and other countries in Eastern Europe have witnessed a sharp spike in fresh coronavirus infections in the past few days. The UK witnessed a 14% rise in new cases at 283,756 cases (the highest), followed by Russia’s 217,322, according to data from the World Health Organization. The UK reported more than 50,000 cases for the first time since July 17; the Delta variant is the reason behind the surge, according to experts. However, infections due to AY.4.2 Delta sub-lineage are spreading rapidly, according to the latest reports. In less than two years, the total number of deaths due to Coronavirus complications crossed 5 million yesterday globally. The US alone has posted over 740,000 fatalities, more than any other nation. Together, the US, the EU, Britain, and Brazil – all upper-middle- or high-income countries – account for one-eighth of the world’s population but nearly half of all reported Covid deaths.

In India, though the Coronavirus situation is under control, there have been reports of a spike in new cases in some parts of the country after the Durga Puja festivals. West Bengal, Assam, and Himachal Pradesh witnessed up to 40% surge in fresh Coronavirus infection in the week after festivals. The emergence of the new Delta ‘sub variant’, AY.4.2 variant in Madhya Pradesh also raises the fear of a third wave.
Meanwhile, India has been reporting below 20,000 new Covid-19 cases for the past 25 days. Even though the uneven pace of vaccination remains a worry, the country has so far administered more than 106.85 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses. According to data from Union Health Ministry, nearly 35% eligible population is fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, India reported 10,423 new Coronavirus cases, the lowest in 259 days, in the last 24 hours, taking its overall Covid-19 tally to 3,42,96,237, while the active cases declined to 1,53,776, the lowest in 250 days, according to data from the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday. With 443 fresh fatalities, The Covid-19 death toll surged to 4,58,880, according to the data updated at 8 am. The active cases now account for 0.45% of the total infections, the lowest since March 2020, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate improved to 98.21%, the highest since March 2020, the ministry said.

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Compound that can potentially ease COVID-19 symptoms identified

Scientists have identified a compound that shows potential in easing the symptoms of COVID-19 infection in laboratory and animals.

The team, from the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the University of North Carolina (UNC) studied the virus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, which is caused by a coronavirus.

MERS is much less common, but much more lethal, than COVID-19.

The study, published in the journal mBio, analysed tens of thousands of measurements in laboratory of proteins, molecular messengers and other signals that occur after infection.

The researchers pinpointed a molecular process, part of the body's quality-control machinery, that plays a central role in causing damage from a coronavirus infection.

They then searched a vast database of compounds and identified one known as AMG PERK 44 that put a halt to virus reproduction in human tissue in the laboratory.

The team also found the compound has a strong effect in mice infected with the virus. The compound boosted lung function and reduced lung damage and weight loss in the mice, particularly in male mice, according to the researchers.

"Studies like this help us learn more about how deadly respiratory viruses operate, how they do what they do, why they attack certain parts of the lung and not others," said virologist Amy Sims, one of two first coauthors of the paper from PNNL, along with Hugh Mitchell.

The scientists noted that it is far too soon to know whether the compound could help patients as it is not currently used as a drug. The results of the study are most useful as part of a broader effort to learn more about respiratory diseases, they added.

"Coronavirus infections cause complex disease phenotypes, and new strategies are needed to disentangle which host pathways are contributing to the development of severe, life-threatening outcomes," Ralph Baric from UNC added.  (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Delhi logs 34 COVID-19 cases, zero death in a day

The national capital reported 34 cases of COVID-19 and zero death in a day while the positivity rate stood at 0.07 per cent, according to data shared by the health department here on Tuesday.

Delhi recorded only four deaths due to the viral infection in October, while five people succumbed to the viral disease in September.

With the new cases, the coronavirus infection tally in the city climbed to 14,39,922. Of this, over 14.14 lakh patients have recovered from the disease. The death toll stands at 25,091.

According to the health bulletin, authorities conducted 48,831 tests, including 36,940 RT-PCR ones, the previous day. There are 309 active Covid cases in Delhi, of which 141 are in home-isolation. The number of containment zones stands at 98.

Delhi reported 18 cases of COVID-19 on Monday, 45 on Sunday and 37 cases on Saturday.

In April and May, the city battled a brutal second wave of the pandemic that claimed a massive number of lives and led to a shortage of oxygen and essential drugs at hospitals.

On April 20, Delhi had reported 28,395 cases, the highest in the city since the beginning of the pandemic. On April 22 the case positivity rate was 36.2 per cent, the highest so far. The highest number of 448 deaths was reported on May 3.

According to the sixth serosurvey, 97 per cent of the population in Delhi have developed antibodies against coronavirus as a result of a large number of people getting exposed to the virus during the second wave and robust vaccination.

All districts in the capital have a seroprevalence of more than 93 per cent. Four districts -- south, central, northeast and east -- have recorded seropositivity of 99 per cent, 99.5 per cent, 99.7 per cent and 99.8 per cent, respectively.

Women (90.1 per cent) have a higher seropositivity rate than men (88.2 per cent). Those aged below 18 have a seropositivity rate of 88 per cent.

Ninety-five per cent of the vaccinated people who have a history of COVID-19 infection have developed antibodies as compared to 82 per cent of unvaccinated ones.

According to government data, over 2.05 crore vaccine doses have been administered in Delhi since the inoculation exercise started on January 16. Over 74 lakh people have received both doses. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: China won't give up on its zero-tolerance COVID policy soon - experts

China will not give up on its zero-tolerance policy towards local COVID-19 cases any time soon, some experts said, as the policy has allowed it to quickly quell local outbreaks, while the virus continues to spread outside its borders. To stop local cases from turning into wider outbreaks, China has developed and continually refined its COVID-fighting arsenal -- including mass testing, targeted lockdowns and travel restrictions - even when those anti-COVID measures occasionally disrupted local economies. "The policy (in China) will remain for a long time," Zhong Nanshan, a respiratory disease expert who helped formulate China's COVID strategy in early 2020, told state media. "How long it will last depends on the virus-control situation worldwide."In a major outbreak in July-August, China counted a total ofover 1,200 local symptomatic infections. In the latest flare-up, mostly in northern China, some 538 local cases were reported between Oct. 17 and Nov. 1. Despite the lower caseload, the geographical spread of the infections has put constraints on China's leisure and tourism sectors. Since Oct. 23, travel agencies have not been allowed to organise tourism between certain provinces, with such restrictions affecting trips to nearly one-third of the mainland's 31 province-level regions including Beijing. Many cities with infections have also closed indoor entertainment and cultural venues. A flurry of marathons, theatrical performances and concerts have been delayed or cancelled. China also requires weeks of quarantine for most travellers arriving from abroad. In contrast, some Asia-Pacific countries are starting to open selectively to fully vaccinated international travellers as they seek to secure a more normal footing for their economies and societies. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Centre's vaccination scheme has created 2 classes of citizens in India, says Kerala HC

The Centre's vaccination scheme has created two classes of citizens in India - those who got COVAXIN, whose movements are restricted, and those who received COVISHIELD and can go anywhere -- Kerala High Court said on Tuesday. The observation by Justice P V Kunhikrishnan came during the hearing of a man's plea for a third jab of an internationally recognised vaccine so that he can go abroad for work. The man, who was working as a welder in Saudi Arabia, moved the court for a third jab as the two doses of COVAXIN he has received is not recognised or approved in the Gulf nation and therefore, he stands to lose his job there as he cannot go there without being vaccinated by an internationally recognised vaccine. "Due to the State-sponsored vaccination scheme, there are two types of citizens in the country - those who received COVAXIN and those who got COVISHIELD. The former's movement is restricted, while the latter can go anywhere," the court said. It said the creation of two classes of citizens has resulted in "infringement of the fundamental right of movement of the petitioner". "His movement is restricted. A citizen is suffering due to a State-sponsored vaccination scheme. It is a clear case of infringement of the fundamental rights of the petitioner," the court observed. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Covid vaccinated people with prior infection may have more antibodies, says study

Antibody levels against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, stay more durable in people who were infected by the disease and then received two doses of vaccine compared with those who only got immunised, according to a study. The research, published in Journal of the American Medical Association on Monday, followed 1,960 health care workers in the US who had received both doses of either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines. This included 73 people who had a positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test result before the first vaccine dose. The 73 were divided into two groups -- those who were infected at 90 days or closer to the first vaccine dose, and those whose exposure to the virus was more than 90 days before the initial shot. After adjusting for vaccine type, age and sex, antibody levels were compared for those with and without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection at one, three and six months following the second vaccine dose. The antibody levels were also compared at one and three months following the second dose between the two groups with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. The two mRNA vaccines evaluated in the study introduce the body's immune system to S1, a protein subunit that is a component of the spikes found on the surface of SARS-CoV-2. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: New Zealand seals off northern region over suspected spread of COVID-19

Authorities planned to seal off the northern tip of New Zealand with police cordons on Tuesday, as they enforce a lockdown in the region over fears of an undetected community transmission of COVID-19 there. Part of the Northland region, about 270 km (168 miles) from the biggest city of Auckland, is to begin a level 3 lockdown from midnight, said Chris Hipkins, the minister coordinating the response to coronavirus. The move follows two cases in the region that lacked a link to any known cases. "It's unclear how they could have possibly picked up the virus," Hipkins told a news conference. "There could be undetected community transmission in Northland right now." The cabinet will review on Monday the decision to seal off the area, where vaccination rates are among the lowest in the country, with just 64% of North Island's eligible population fully vaccinated. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who was visiting Northland on Tuesday, had to abruptly halt a media conference after being continuously interrupted and heckled by at least two people, who appeared to be anti-vaxxers. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Japan eases COVID-19 border curbs, trails major partners

Japan on Tuesday confirmed plans to gradually ease COVID-19 border restrictions, but fell short of calls from business lobbies to open up the country in line with its major trading partners. The government has decided to review border controls in stages, chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters, responding to media reports that quarantine for business travellers would be cut from 10 days to 3. The easing may go into effect from next Monday, while daily border entrants would be raised from 3,500 people to 5,000 later this month, national broadcaster NHK said. Domestic and foreign business groups in Japan have lobbied the government to ease border restrictions to be more on the same terms as other countries. The United States and European Union allow entry to travellers from most countries as long as they have proof of COVID-19 vaccination. While the shorter quarantine would be welcome, it would only benefit business travellers and Japanese nationals, said Michael Mroczek, president of the European Business Council in Japan. The bigger issue is the remaining hold on long-term visas. "Not being able to bring essential personnel to Japan is currently the number one issue for European industry," he said. (Reuters)
