Chennai, Nov 2 (UNI) In a tragic incident, a woman traffic constable, who was on duty
at the Chief Minister's Special Cell at the State Secretariat, was crushed to death and
another injured, when a huge tree fell on them due to the heavy rains today morning.
Police sources said the woman cop was identified as Kavitha (34) and the injured
head constable, also from the traffic wing, was identified as Murugan (48).
Both of them were on duty at the fourth gate at the Fort St George, the seat of power,
when the huge tree fell on them at around 0915 hrs.
The woman cop was having her breakfast when the tree fell on her crushing her to
death on the spot.
Police and fire service personnel retrieved her body and sent to Government hospital
for post mortem.
Murugan, who alerted her on seeing the tree falling, sustained injuries and was admitted
to a hospital.
Tamil Nadu Director General of Police C Sylendra Babu, Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu
visited the spot and inspected the rescue operations.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed shock over the death of Kavitha and announced
a solatium of Rs ten lakh to her family from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
In a statement here, he also expressed grief and anguish over her death and offered
is deep condolences to the bereaved family members.
AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam and joint coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami
also condoled her death.
