In a shocker to the BJP, Congress party snatched Hangal Assembly constituency from the ruling party with its candidate Srinivas Mane emerging a winner with a margin of 7,426 votes.
Counting of votes took place on November 2 as per schedule.
While a formal announcement of the result is yet to be made by the District Election officer, Mr. Mane emerged the clear winner with 87,300 votes.
BJP's Shivaraj Sajjanar, a former MLA from Haveri, finished with 79,874 votes.
JD(S) candidate Niyaz Shaikh got 923 votes.
Hangal is in Haveri district, which is the home district of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai who said, “I have taken the election setback very seriously, and will take the necessary corrective action.”

Earlier, the BJP won the bypoll in Sindgi Assembly segment.
BJP candidate Ramesh Bhusnur got 74,463 votes against 49,897 for Congress candidate Ashok Managuli after 14 rounds of counting.
However, an official announcement is pending.
JD(S) had fielded Naziya Angadi for the bypoll.
