HISAR: Mayyar village of
Hisar district is breaking the stereotype with families voluntarily putting names of their daughters and daughter in laws on nameplates outside their houses. The village, now under Hisar city limits, has 1,500 houses and a population of 7,000 people. Now, each and every house is identified with the help of female members of the family.
Progressive steps were taken under the initiative “Laado Swabhiman Utsav”(Daughter pride festival) which was started by Sunil Jaglan, former sarpanch of Bibipur village. Jaglan was inspired by the Swamitva Yojna launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi which helped villagers get their property cards. The “Selfie with Daughter” campaign had also received recognition from PM Modi.
“Work for womaen empowerment is being carried out under Selfie with Daughter Foundation and Jindal Stainless Foundation at Mayar village. Work has started in ten nearby villages as well. For this, Team Lado has been formed in each village,” Sunil Jaglan said.
Akshara of Mayyar village said that this is a new beginning for her village which will bring a positive change in mindset. “Earlier, family name was associated with a male or his gotra but now, girls will feel empowered,” Akshara said.
Neelam, a resident of the village, said it was indeed a dream that houses have been named after daughters and daughter-in-laws of the village. Sunil Jaglan said that the nameplate campaign will also bring about a change in the surrounding villages as rural women have responded positively to this change. Sunil Jaglan had started the campaign in the year 2015, and nameplates have been installed in about 17,000 homes so far.
