Deshmukh produced before court

Deshmukh produced before court

Mumbai, Nov 2 (UNI) Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) early Tuesday after more than 13 hours of interrogation in connection with a money laundering case.

Deshmukh was produced before a Special Court later in the day for his remand hearing, following his medical examination, including Covid-19 tests.

According to the sources, he was not cooperating and was evasive in his replies to the agency. He was arrested around 1.30 am.

The ED sources said Deshmukh was confronted with alleged evidence gathered by the agency, which includes statement of witness in the case.

The ED is carrying out an investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with the alleged Rs 100 crore extortion case.

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh had accused the NCP leader of asking dismissed assistant inspector Sachin Vaze to collect the Rs 100 crore from hotels and bars in Mumbai every month, a charge which Deshmukh has consistently denied.

Vaze was arrested by the NIA in connection with the Antilia bomb scare case.
