  • An allegedly drunk driver transporting three intoxicated passengers was arrested by East London police after colliding into the local traffic department's wall.
  • He has been charged with driving under the influence, as well as damage to property.
  • The man suffered head injuries and was taken to a local health centre before he was transferred to police cells.

An allegedly drunk driver crashed into the wall of the traffic department in Braelyn, East London, just before midday on Tuesday.

The Buffalo City Metro has revealed that it does not have details of what exactly happened, because traffic officers' efforts to get a statement from the driver and his three passengers had failed as they were all "intoxicated".

Buffalo City Metro spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said the green Toyota Corolla sedan smashed into the wall at 11:30.

Ngwenya said that, on arrival, "our officers noticed that the driver was bleeding from the head. He was confirmed to be residing in Duncan Village. He had three passengers in the vehicle, all were intoxicated, as result we could not get any info from them".

According to Ngwenya, the driver was arrested at 12:10 and taken to the East London police station where he was charged with driving while under the influence, and for damage to municipal property.

He added that the driver had been treated for head injuries at the Empilweni healthcare centre in Gompo before he was detained.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana could not immediately give further details.

His response will be added once received.
