Newly-wed couple killed in ghastly road mishap

Chennai: In a sad turn of events, a newly wed couple died in a ghastly accident near Kadambathur in Tiruvallur district after a multi axle concrete mixer truck toppled over their car on Sunday night.

The deceased were identified as Manoj Kumar (34), a pharma distributor from Arakkonam and Karthika (30), a doctor from Perungalathur in Chennai. The couple entered wedlock only on 28 October.

According to sources, on Sunday, the couple had gone to Karthika’s house and were returning to Arakkonam by car. The vehicle was plying on the Poonamallee-Arakkonam highway near Kadambathur at around 9.45 pm, when the driver of a concrete mixer truck plying on the opposite side, lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a turn and hit the car. The truck crushed the car and the couple in it. The truck driver fled the spot.

Personnel from the Mappedu police station and the Fire and Rescue Services struggled for a few hours to retrieve the bodies.

A crane was brought to remove the dead bodies from the mangled car. The Mappedu police have registered a case.
