Stating that the central government is sympathetic towards resumption of iron ore mining in Goa, Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said that his government is expecting positive support from the Supreme Court as regards the Goa mining matter pending before it.

“The mining matter is sub judice and without the permission of Supreme Court, neither the state government has the right to take any decision nor the central government can take any action,” he maintained.

“After presentation of the case before the Supreme Court by the state and the Centre, we are expecting positive support from the Supreme Court,” Gadkari reckoned, noting that only after that both the governments can take some decisions.

Maintaining that he was also involved in the attempts to resume the mining industry in Goa, the Union minister said that Goa’s economy is related to the iron ore export, which is why the government has been working sympathetically to resolve the particular issue.

“But Supreme Court is Supreme Court, and so we have to make proper presentation before the Supreme Court and find a way out of this.” he noted.

The iron ore industry in Goa came to a standstill in 2018 after the apex court quashed 88 mining leases in Goa.
