Indian High Commissioner to sri lanka Gopal Bagle met and discussed with the fishermen of the northern part of sri lanka the Indo-Sri Lankan fisheries issue.

TNA media Spokesperson and Member of parliament MA Sumanthiran stated that the trawling activities carried out by indian fishermen were discussed during the meeting.

Northern fishermen have informed the indian High Commission about the impact of trawler fishing on the livelihoods of northern fishermen in sri lanka, their economy, marine resources and the environment.

Comment from the Fishermen's Association involved in the discussion

The tamil Nadu fishermen have to give up trawl fishing activities and engage in alternative occupations, and that he had made it clear to the indian High Commissioner that the tamil Nadu fishermen had not given up the trawl fishing business despite being given that time.

However, he said he had told the indian High Commissioner that 5 years had now elapsed since the granting of the extension and that he could no longer grant the three-minute extension.

He also said that although the central government had agreed to suspend trawler fishing, the tamil Nadu state government would not comply.

In this context, the indian High Commissioner has questioned the fishermen of the northern part of sri lanka as to whether they are ready to hold a discussion with tamil Nadu fishermen.

In response, the fishermen said they were not ready to negotiate with tamil Nadu fishermen.
