Chennai: Civic body announces lucky draws, cash awards to boost vaccine coverage
The city corporation has announced lottery prizes and gifts sponsored by corporates and NGOs including cash awards and cooking equipment to attract people in 300 completely non-vaccinated areas."This was done in many districts in Tamil Nadu... we decided to offer the same. The response has been very good in Royapuram's SM Nagar and in Sholinganallur's Kannagi Nagar and Ezhil Nagar... Along with prizes, we are also giving them dry ration," said Royapuram zonal health officer Dr Velmurugan. At least residents from 15 streets came forward after these prizes were announced. Hotel employee held for hoax bomb call
Police on Sunday arrested a hotel employee who made a call about a bomb threat to the chief minister's house. It later turned out to be a hoax. Palanivel of Cuddalore, who was staying in Mambakkam, called the police control room and said bombs planted at the chief minister's residence on Chittaranjan Salai in Teynampet would go off. After a search confirmed it was a hoax, police nabbed Palanivel. Inquiries revealed he had dreams of becoming a playback singer.
Chennai: Madipakkam roads bear brunt of red tape, poor planning
Several roads in Madipakkam are battered by rain and metro water work and there's nothing being done about them.Scores of petitions by residents to both the Greater Chennai Corporation and the metro water have elicited no resposne. The metro water sewage and water pipeline work began in many locations in added areas of Madhavaram, Manali, Madipakkam, Manapakkam and other areas after the pandemic eased in 2021. But during the monsoon, these roads turn unusable and dangerous. With more rainfall predicted in the coming days, several residents want the roads to be repaired immediately. Full story here
Chennai: Tasmac bars reopen after six months, minus safety checks
It was hardly 11am. The bar attached to a Tasmac shop on Triplicane High Road was already busy. Two staff checked the temperature of customers but did not record their names and numbers.Once inside, a maskless waiter suggested that there was another bar upstairs, with chairs. Similar was the situation at many bars attached to Tasmac shops on Monday as tipplers made a beeline soon after they opened. Full story here
Tamil Nadu: 2 Namakkal students score 710 of 720 marks in NEET
Geethanjali S A and M Pravin of Namakkal scored 710 marks of 720 in National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2021, results of which were declared on Monday. While Geethanjali was ranked 23rd nationally, Pravin was ranked 30th. Last year, for the same marks, Tamil Nadu’s Srijan got all India 8th rank. Tamil Nadu: Madras HC quashes 10.5 per cent vanniyar quota, calls it ‘discriminatory’
Holding that caste-based reservation is impermissible, the Madras high court has quashed 10.5 per cent quota law for vanniyars, introduced by the AIADMK government minutes before the Election Commission announced the April 2021 assembly election. Full report here
Tribal kids trafficked to pollinate Tamil Nadu cotton farms
Chasing birds in the Jawadhu hills forests on an August afternoon, 13-year-old Sakthi and his friends Tirumurthy and Prabhu were approached by a middle-aged man offering them clothes, money and mobile phones. The man loaded them all on his motorbike and rode four-and-a-half-hours away to the cotton fields of Siruvachur in Perambalur district. Full story here
Tamil Nadu's daily Covid-19 count falls below 1,000; first time since March
For the first time in more than seven months, Tamil Nadu recorded fewer than 1,000 new Covid infections. However, public health experts said it may be too soon to celebrate. On March 18, when cases were slowly increasing ahead of the second wave, Tamil Nadu reported 989 new cases and eventually hit a peak of 36,184 cases a day on May 21. Full report here
Tamil Nadu: Car crushed, newly weds die in Tiruvallur
In a tragic turn of events, a newly wed couple died in a ghastly accident at Kadambathur in Tiruvallur district after a multi axle concrete mixer truck toppled over their car on Sunday night.The deceased Manoj Kumar, 31, of Arakkonam and Karthika, 30, of Perungalathur had tied the knot on October 28. The Tamil Nadu government has declared November 5 as local holiday for schools, colleges and government offices to give an extended Diwali holiday. The state government announced that schools, colleges and government offices will function on November 20 to compensate the local holiday.
Mason murdered near Coimbatore
A 50-year-old mason was murdered by his neighbour at Kangeyampalayam in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday evening. The deceased has been identified as A Varadharaj, 50, of Ambedkar Nagar at Tiruchengode in Namakkal district. Police said he had separated from his wife five years ago and had been residing in a rental house Kangeyampalayam village near Sulur for the last two months. Full story here
Advisories issued to firecracker shops in Tamil Nadu to avoid accidents
District administrations in Tamil Nadu have started issuing advisories asking cracker shops to avoid sale of those fireworks that have been banned by the Supreme Court and the Tamil Nadu government. They have also started issuing advisories on the dos and don'ts at the cracker shops to averts accidents like the one at a firecracker shop in Sankarapuram in Kallakurichi district last week that claimed eight lives. Madras HC strikes down 10.5 per cent reservation for Vanniars
The Madras High Court bench in Madurai on Monday struck down the law providing 10.5 per cent internal reservation for Vanniars as unconstitutional and also asked whether reservation could be given on caste basis.The legislation for 10.5 per cent reservation for Vanniars was passed by the earlier AIADMK government and was implemented by the present DMK government.
Puducherry adds 43 new Covid-19 cases
Puducherry logged 43 fresh coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours ending 10am on Monday taking the overall tally to 1,28,056, a senior official of the department of health said on Monday. The union territory reported a fatality after not recording any death for seven straight days. The death toll went up to 1,858.
Man kills daughter over wife's 'affair'
A man killed his daughter by slitting her throat at Villivakkam after she failed to answer questions posed by him about her mother on Saturday night. The accused, Radhakrishnan, 34 of Villivakkam was married to Lavanya, 30, a nurse and the couple have two children. The couple had a love marriage, police said. Full story here

Tamil Nadu schools welcome students with roses, chocolates and cartoon characters
A warm welcome awaited students who returned to their schools in Tamil Nadu on Monday morning after a gap of 19 months. The schools welcomed the students with roses and chocolates. Chennai: Two cars catch fire on GST Road, traffic comes to standstill
Two cars went up in flames on GST Road on Saturday night in different incidents. No casualty was reported in the incidents, and all the passengers escaped unhurt. The two accidents happened within three hours, police said. Full story here
Tamil Nadu: Tasmac eyes liquor sale of 1,000 crore
Tasmac wine shops across the state are expected to clock a collective sale of 1,000 crore on five days beginning Diwali eve this week. The festival of lights falls on Thursday followed by an extended weekend. Chennai’s Koyambedu and Velachery flyovers opened
Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Monday inaugurated a 15km-long flyover at Koyambedu and the one arm of Velachery flyover. The Chennai’s new flyovers were constructed by the state highways department. The highways department started constructing the Koyambedu flyover in 2015 and was supposed to be opened for public use in 2018. It got delayed due to land acquisition issues.
