Niranjan Mishra, principal of the BJB Autonomous College, said more than 60 per cent of the first-year students attended classes on Monday. “Many students come from far-off places of Odisha and outside. As the Diwali festival will be celebrated on November 4, the attendance will increase after this festival is over,” he added.

Sasmita Sarangi, principal of Rajdhani College, said every department has conducted classes for first year UG students. “Around 50 per cent of the students attended the classes on the first day. Last date for applying for hostel accommodation is November 3. Attendance will increase after this,” she added.

Similarly, Sasmita Mohanty, chairperson of PG Council, Rama Devi Women’s University, said they received 50 percent attendance on the first day. “We have a plan to hold orientation programmes for the newcomers after 15 days,” she added.

Bablu Palai, a UG first year student from Ganjam, said he attended two classes- English and political science- on the first day. “I feel happy to attend offline classes after several months. There was an excitement in my mind to meet new friends and attend classes in the new college,” he added.

Though phase-I admission has been completed, the higher education department will conduct phase-II admission for the students who will pass the offline board examinations of Plus II arts, science, commerce and vocational streams. Results of the examination are yet to be published.

The passed-out students of this offline examination can fill up their common application forms through the student academic management system (SAMS) portal and take part in the UG admission process. Vacant seats in the degree colleges will be filled up in the phase-II. These students will later attend the classes.

Meanwhile, the higher education department has also announced that PG first year classes will commence from November 15.
