Chandel observes Mental Health Day

Chandel, October 30 2021: Chandel District Mental Mealth Programme (DMHP) and District Health Society (DHS) observed the 30th World Mental Health Day on the central theme "Mental Health in an Unequal World" at Chandel Christian village community hall on Saturday.
Chandel deputy commissioner Mayanglambam Rajkumar Singh, chief medical officer Dr Serthani Serbum, District Hospital medical superintendent Dr Joyson Mathew Monsang and Christian village chief Laksman Jasha attended the event as chief guest, president and guests of honour, respectively.
The observance was aimed at creating awareness on mental health and its importance in everyone's life at every step.
Chandel district nodal officer (DNO), DMHP Dr Khangembam Robindro Singh spoke on the topics - Mental health matters, Drug addiction, Mental health crisis during Covid-19 pandemic, Suicide, Mental health and wellbeing, Mental health in an unequal world, End of stigma and Mental health for all.
He also explained about the theme "Mental Health in an Unequal World" and highlighted that there are about 60 to 85 percent treatment gap among persons with mental illness.
He also mentioned that one out of every six persons suffers from one or other types of mental illness at any point of time.
More than half of all mental illnesses start by the age of 14.However, due to various factors they are not diagnosed at the early stage and do not get proper treatment.
In terms of disease burden of the world, depression ranks second as of now, but in 2030 it will be the number one disease in the world, he maintained.
In his address, DC M Rajkumar shared personal views on the ever-increasing problems of common mental illnesses and importance for early intervention.
He also explained the impact of stigma and discrimination which are the big roadblock people need to overcome to discuss their problems with psychiatrists.
He also emphasised on the notion that life has ups and down, and everyone should try to be flexible.
Chandel Christian village chief Laxman Jasha pointed out that more than 70 percent of people in Chandel might be suffering from mental health problems.
He said that liquor and other drug problems might be a major issue among the youth of Chandel.
CMO Dr Serthani Serbum during her speech mentioned that there is no health without mental health.
She said that mental health is as much as delicate and a dynamic one.
There is nothing more to take care of other than our mental health, she added.
