American model Gigi Hadid has broken up with singer Zayn Malik after he allegedly hit her mother Yolanda Hadid. Their split comes after nearly six years of on-off dating.

In a statement on Twitter, Zayn said that the "private matter" being made public has jeopardised the "safe space" in which he and the 26-year-old model "co-parent" their one-year-old daughter, Khai.

People reports that multiple sources have confirmed the split.  Gigi’s representatives further stated that she was solely focused on the best for her daughter and she has urged everyone to give her some privacy during this time.

The news comes after Malik issued statements denying claims surrounding an alleged incident that took place between him and Gigi's mother Yolanda.

Multiple sources shared with People magazine that the couple is no longer together. “They are not together right now. They are both good parents though,” shared a source with the magazine. Meanwhile, Gigi’s representatives told the publication, “Gigi is solely focused on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time.”

Hours before the report of their break-up emerged, Zayn issued a statement on Twitter where he spoke about a “private matter.”
