Assam: Tezpur University youth held for 'raping' fellow batchmate

GUWAHATI: A 24-year-old Tezpur University student was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping a fellow female batchmate on the campus.
The university authorities have confirmed that they have received a complaint of "sexual harassment" and have ordered a probe into the matter. However, the youth claimed that he was "innocent and was being framed", police said.
A case under section 376 (rape) of the IPC was registered at Tezpur police station on Tuesday. The accused was produced before a court in Sonitpur district, which has sent him to 14-day judicial custody, on Thursday. "The court found a prima facie case against him and sent him to judicial custody," Sonitpur SP Dhananjay P Ghanawat told TOI. Quoting the FIR, police said the alleged incidents of "sexual assault and harassment" took place on October 13, 15 and 16.
Tezpur University registrar Biren Das told TOI, "We have received a complaint and the internal complaints committee is probing it."
