COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police on Thursday arrested a functionary of the Akhila Bharatha Hindu
Mahasabha for his
hate speech against Muslim community. S Premkumar alias
Boxer Prem, 37, of Okkiliyar Street made the hate speech during a protest near south taluk office on October 23 against the demolition of
temples in Bangladesh and attack on Hindus in that country.
Premkumar is
Akhila Bharatha Hindu Mahasabha youth wing’s Kongu regional president.
The Race Course police said Premkumar and 13 members of the organisation gathered in front of the south taluk office here without getting any prior permission from police and staged the protest.
The police said while addressing the members of the right wing organisation, Premkumar targeted the community. His hate speech could have triggered tension among the two communities in Coimbatore city, according to the police. The protesters also failed to wear facemasks and maintain social distance.
The police registered a case against Premkumar under sections 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 153A (1) (a) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 505 (2) (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.
He was remanded in judicial custody.
