“The movement of Californians to Texas is not new," said Research Economist Luis Torres, in a press release about the research. “In 19 of the last 20 years, California ranked as the top move-to-Texas state. The only exception was Louisiana in 2005 as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The share of Californians relocating to Texas has increased every year since 2011.”
Moving to Texas: Relocation data
Aside from California, a number of other states lost residents to Texas last year. In order, other top sources for new Texans include Florida, Colorado, Illinois and Louisiana, according to the release, with the Sunshine State taking a 7.2% share; less than half of California’s influx totals.
The researchers also parsed out relocation data at the county level across the U.S., providing a more granular look at these migration patterns. According to the research paper, Los Angeles County, topped U.S. counties as the main source for new Texans in 2020, representing 3.1% of all migrations to the state, with Maricopa County, Arizona and San Diego County, California rounding out the top three, in order.
Among out-of-state residents relocating to Texas, Harris County claimed the top spot with 10.4% of all relocations to the state, followed by Tarrant, Bexar, Travis and Dallas counties, in order, according to the research.
