Google unveils Android 12L as feature-drop update for large-screen devices

28 October 2021 0

Google has announced a feature-drop update for large-screen devices, dubbed Android 12L. Google touts this feature-drop has been purposefully built for the large screens like tablets, foldables, and devices that run ChromeOS. The update will be released publically early next year, in time for the next wave of Android 12 tablets and foldables.

Currently, Google has released the developer preview of the Android 12L. With the help of the preview, one can try the newly refined UI on your tablets.

Google mentions the Android 12L refines the UI across notifications, quick Settings, lock screen, overview, home screen, and more. For example, the notification shade and the lock screen on screens above 600dp now use a new two-column layout to take advantage of the screen area.

The Android 12L also optimizes the system apps. Also, multitasking will feel more intuitive now. Android 12L brings a new taskbar on the large screens so that switching between the favorite apps becomes easier. This also makes split-screen mode easier to discover.

Google says it is already working with its OEM partners to bring these new features to large-screen devices. The developer preview of 12L is coming soon to the Lenovo P12 Pro. Google advises developers to check out how their apps work in split-screen mode with windows of various sizes. Google will also warn users with a notice on the app’s Play Store listing page in case it detects the app is not optimized for large screens.

Google plans to release the Android 12L feature-drop early next year. Later, a public beta for Pixel devices will be opened sans some features that particularly target the large screen.
