New sinkholes at south Kolkata park raise alarm

KOLKATA: Fresh sinkholes have developed at Indrani Park, triggering alarm among residents and nature lovers who fear the small green patch will be lost if there is no action.
Residents and the corporate house that was looking after the park have written to government agencies but no intervention has happened yet. “I hope the authorities step in soon to save the park,” said associate professor Debnita Chakravarti.
KMDA authorities said they were trying to come up with a solution. "The matter has already been discussed earlier with KIT. There are plans to look into the issues after Chhath Puja,” a KMDA official said on Tuesday.
“This work may not require more than Rs 4-5 lakh but estimates have to be placed before the government,” he said.
Nandini Chakravarty, MD of Mine Line Pvt Ltd that has been looking after the park as part of its CSR programme for a decade-and-a-half, said help was urgently required to save the park that is currently shut to prevent any accident.
