T20 World Cup 2021, Scotland vs Namibia Highlights: Debutants Namibia will look to continue their fairytale run when they take on a bruised Scotland in the ICC T20 World Cup on Wednesday. Having earned its right to rub shoulders with the cricketing elites, Namibia will now be keen to test their skills against the best in business and a win over Scotland will do them a world of good before they take on the likes of Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and New Zealand in group 2. Scotland, on the other hand, were flying high with three successive wins in the first round before they were bought to earth by Afghanistan with an embarrassing 130-run defeat.
Scotland
109/8 (20.0)Namibia
115/6 (19.1)Namibia beat Scotland by 4 wickets
And Smit takes Namibia home with a six in the final over and it's glorious! They open their campaign with a four-wicket win over Scotland. Some brilliant bowling at the start and they held their nerves in the end. NAM: 115/6 (19.1 overs)
A six from Wiese (16) takes Namibia closer to victory but Scotland are not giving up easily! Leask takes his second wicket of the evening and dismisses the batter. Watt with the catch at short third man. NAM: 102/5 (17.4 overs)
Sharif comes back into the attack and Smit (12*) punishes the overpitched delivery for a four. And that's the kind of reaction Namibia require after the dismissal of Williams on 23. The equation: 25 in 30 balls. NAM: 85/4 (15 overs)
Leask adds a wicket to his 44-run knock! The ball sneaks through the bat and the pad and hits the top of the sticks... there was nothing Erasmus (4) could do about it. A big, big wicket for Scotland. Game on! NAM: 61/3 (11.2 overs)
Williams comes up with a moment to rejoice as he wallops Watt high for a brilliant six, but minutes later, in the next over, Green (9) perishes after trying to imitate his partner. Munsey with the catch at long-off. NAM: 50/2 (9.1 overs)
Green (7*) starts off slowly but shows his class against Greaves as he smacks the bowler for a well-hit boundary. The batter sinks to one knee and scoops the delivery through the short fine region for his first four. NAM: 40/1 (8 overs)
There's the breakthrough! Right after van Lingen's (18) consecutive boundaries, Sharif dismisses the batter with a slower ball. A thick-leading edge and the catch is taken by Berrington. Williams and Green hold fort. NAM: 29/1 (6 overs)
Namibia off to a calculated start in Abu Dhabi now. Both Williams and van Lingen are sticking to rotating the strike, rather than choosing to go for ambitious shots right from the start. Scotland need a wicket. NAM: 16/0 (4 overs)
Craig Williams and Michael van Lingen open the chase for Namibia. Bradley Wheal restarts the proceedings with the ball and it's not the brightest of beginnings! Four leg byes on the second ball itself. Two singles too. NAM: 6/0 (1 over)
After Frylinck removed Watt for his second wicket, Namibia put more pressure on the batters. Devoid of any boundaries, Scotland limp towards a below-par finish. Greaves (25) and Davey (5*) try their best to get some reckless runs in the final over, bowled by Wiese but they can only score seven runs and lose the earlier in the process. SCO: 109/8 (20 overs)
Pikky ya France is Nambia's off spinner with one of the most beautiful actions one can imagine. The camera from behind is the best place to start. His arms whirl up like Harbhajan Singh but at a reduced speed -- watching Bhaji's video at 0.25 speed, say -- as the arms bloom out like a flower. Then in a blink, he turns into a Nathan Lyon ish release with the high left knee and a languid release. An action for sore eyes, if one.
Scotland suffer a big blow as in-form Leask is sent back to the dressing room after an enterprising 27-ball 44. Namibia's Smit keeps it straight and Leask misses the sweep and the ball crashes into the stumps. SCO: 93/6 (16.2 overs)
Leask (44*) and Greaves (17*) continue to build their partnership in the death overs. SCO: 92/5 (16 overs)
Despite being five down, Leask (37*) doesn't seem disheartened a bit! He maintains his momentum and hits his second six of the innings. Greaves (11*) chips in too, with a four against Scholtz. 10 runs off the over. SCO: 78/5 (14 overs)
Leask (27*) finds his rhythm and smacks van Lingen for a four and a six to up the ante a bit. But in the next over, Frylinck brings Cross' (19) innings to an end. Bowled! The off-stump gets hit and Scotland suffer more. SCO: 57/5 (11.1 overs)
After handling Scholtz's spin and getting six runs off the previous over, Leask (13*) assumes responsibility. He takes on Wiese and nails a dominating pull shot through deep mid-wicket for four! Cross is on 17*. SCO: 39/4 (9 overs)
Namibia's Ruben Trumpelmann, with a name worthy of a fairy tale character ala Rumpeltstiltskin, shock and awed Scotland with a three-wicket burst in the first over. Born in Pretoria in South Africa, he even represented South African universities, when a chance meeting at an airport changed his life. It was Albie Morkel, Namibia’s assistant coach, who he bumped into.
“My dad was born in Windhoek [capital of Namibia], so I always knew about my link to Namibia but I never thought about it much. Then in September last year I saw Albie (Morkel) at the airport and he said why don't I consider playing for Namibia, because Namibia by then had gained One Day International status. Pierre de Bruyn [the head coach of Namibia] was also a big motivator so I decided to join Namibia,” he has said.
Another left-hand pacer who has the ability to curve back in, much like Shaheen Afridi, leaves his footprints on yet another crime scene in the first over of a match. He removed Scotland’s premier batsman George Munsey for a first-ball fuck when the left-hand batter inside-edged a cut on to his stumps. On the third ball, came the one that went with the angle that had Calum MacLeod edging behind. The best came next ball. A lovely screaming nipbacker that trapped the stand-in captain Richie Berrington in front of the stumps. The left-handers are leaving a trail of wreck behind them in this World Cup.
Wiese helps Namibia get their fourth wicket! Wallace (4) is beaten for pace and gets trapped between the wickets. As plumb as it gets! Leask comes on next and hits the second four of the innings to end the powerplay. SCO: 22/4 (6 overs)
Wallace and Cross are taking it very slowly after their team's initial collapse. Frylinck joins the attack for Namibia and concedes just two runs. Trumpelmann comes back and maintains the pressure on the batting pair. SCO: 6/3 (3 overs)
Berrington, the stand-in skipper, is the latest one to walk back to the pavilion. He fails to judge the trajectory of the ball and it hits him right on the pads. Trapped and dismissed! Trumpelmann with his third of the night! SCO: 2/3 (1 overs)
