  • Landlord Gordon McBeth, 44, stabbed tenant Darryl Gilland, 28, more than 30 times after arriving at the residence drunk with insulation for their home
  • He has been charged with second-degree murder and the Gilland family is now calling for the charges to be heightened to first-degree
  • Gilland and his fiancée Samantha Pohlman, 23, had recently moved into their new home and had requested a space heater or insulation to heat their home
  • Pohlman told DailyMail.com that McBeth was known to be an alcoholic
  • When he got there, he allegedly threw insulation at them and threatened to kill Gilland if it wasn't enough
  • Two men helped Pohlman by pulling McBeth off Gilland and holding him at gunpoint until police arrived

The Missouri landlord accused of killing a tenant by viciously stabbing the man more than 30 times during a dispute over heating arrived to the residence drunk, the victim's heartbroken fiancée told DailyMail.com in an exclusive interview.

Gordon McBeth, 44, who has been charged in the violent attack on Darryl Gilland, 28, was belligerent when he spoke with Gilland's fiancée, Samantha Pohlman's, when he brought insulation for their freezing Kansas City rental home, Pohlman said.

'[He was] definitely drunk,' she told DailyMail.com on Wednesday. 'He was known to be an alcoholic. He even told us: "You're making me drive drunk."'

At 3.30pm on October 22, witnesses told KCTV that they heard McBeth driving erratically into the couple's driveway.

Pohlman said McBeth got out of the car and threw insulation at the couple. She told KCTV that McBeth threatened to kill Gilland if the insulation wasn't good enough for them.

McBeth than 'flipped,' Pohlman said, and pounced on Gilland.

While waiting on first responders, Pohlman attended to her bleeding fiancé, who asked her to use his phone to count his breathing to tell him if he was alive.

'He kept telling me to use his phone and count his breaths to see if he was alive. I just couldn't,' she told DailyMail.com on Wednesday.

'If I lost him, I lost my world,' she said. 'I didn't want to think about it. In my head, he had to [live]. In my head, he had too.'

Gilland died in her arms.

The couple had only moved into the home the week before and had negotiated a lower rent price in exchange for helping with the remodel.

The couple had messaged McBeth to fix the heating as it had been in the 40s at night and requested a space heater or insulation to heat their home.

'He [Gilland] just messaged him like: "Hey, can we please just do something about the heating situation,' Pohlman told KCTV 5.

'At first, the guy was perfectly nice about it. He was like: "Yeah, I'll come over and we'll do that," and then just out of nowhere, he completely flipped and acted like we were asking too much and being a complete burden.'

The stunned fiancee turned to her new neighbors to help keep McBeth from fleeing the scene.

'I ran to the neighbors to the right, because I knew them and I knew they had a gun,' she told DailyMail.com.

Unfortunately, the neighbors weren't home and Pohlman had to run across the street for help. Friends of the homeowner were drinking outside before a birthday party.

'I ran across the street and I didn't know them [the people sitting outside]. They were friends of the people who lived there. And they happen to have a gun,' she said.

They ran to help her after hearing 'horrific screaming.'

One neighbor pulled McBeth off Gilland and used Pohlman's phone to call an ambulance, while the other held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

'I held his head and I told him "it was going to be okay" and that the ambulance was coming. And that I loved him,' she told Fox 4.

Pohlman told DailyMail.com that she would not be staying in the home, although she did the first night.

'It was horrible,' she told DailyMail.com. 'I thought if I'd go to sleep, I'd wake up to him coming home from work.'

She told DailyMail.com that Gilland had recently gotten a job at Broadridge, a mail processing company in Kansas City, where he worked nights and that she was 'really proud' of him.

However, Pohlman said she couldn't sleep because she 'worried someone was coming to finish the job.'

When DailyMail.com asked if she feared someone would harm her, she said: 'Even the detective told us: "Even though he was behind bars, but we don't know who he knows."'

As far as Pohlman is aware, this is McBeth's first offense, but she believed he'll strike again.

'As unhinged as he was, it won't be the last [time],' she told DailyMail.com.

Pohlman told Fox 4 she remembered Gilland as 'such a sweet, nervous gentleman from the beginning' when they met for the first time five years ago.

She told DailyMail.com that she wants to remember Gilland as he was: bringing her home-baked chocolate chip cookies and a stuffed Pokémon to IHop, where they had their first date and fell in love, and enjoying the meals he cooked.

On the couple's first date, Gilland - who was working at Papa Murphy's pizza place at the time - had taken home cookie dough from work and baked it for her before their first date.

She told DailyMail.com that her fiancé wasn't much of a baker, but that he 'loved to cook for her a lot' and fried chicken was his best dish.

'He was a very homestyle cooking kind of guy,' she told DailyMail.com.

Gilland was also a talented musician and had been in several bands since the age of 14. Pohlman said he wanted to be a musician, but it was the 'wrong place, wrong time.'

Gilland's parents Darryl Gilland Senior and Donna Groves are also distraught over losing their son 'over nothing.'

'[It was] nothing, it was over nothing,' Groves told KCTV 5.

'My son was a very gentle, loving, caring, and would do anything for anybody. He did not deserve this.'

His father Darryl Senior called the event 'indescribable' to KSHB 41, as he barely held back tears.

'It's indescribable. Have you ever had this happen before? I don't know what to say about it,' he said.

'I hear people talking about losing their children...but over 30 times, my son bled to death.

'He was just so full of life, now, and I was just so proud of him, I always told him how proud I was of him.'

Samantha informed Darryl Senior that his son had 'posted about it on Facebook' and told her that his dad was proud of him, Fox 4 reported.

Darryl Senior responded that he felt 'lonely' and 'loved him [his son] very much.'

His mother said he 'wanted to be the man of the house and wanted to take care of her [Samantha].'

The family set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of transporting Darryl's body back to his hometown in Indiana to be buried next to his grandparents, who the family reported was very closed to him.

Pohlman said it would 'hurt' to have her fiancé so far away, but that she knew it's 'what he would have wanted.'

Any additional funds will be transferred to Samantha to 'assist in getting her on her feet,' the GoFundMe said.

The GoFundMe page and it has surpassed its $10,000 goal with $11,432 as of October 27.

The family is now asking for the charges to be increased to first-degree murder.

Pohlman told DailyMail.com on Wednesday that Darryl Senior was the one calling prosecutor Robert Sanders demanding the charges be changed to a higher degree, but he can't get a hold of him.

When asked if the bumped up charge would help alleviate her grief, she told DailyMail.com: 'At the very least, it puts him where he belongs and stops him from hurting anyone else.'

Pohlman also hopes McBeth stays in jail.

'If he gets out, he won't live long,' Pohlman told DailyMail.com. 'He better hope he stays in there.'

McBeth is due back in court on November 2.
