Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) finally fesses up to his affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) in the eighth episode of Impeachment: American Crime Story, fittingly titled Stand By Your Man.

Throughout the whole scandal, which Clinton had denied both publicly and privately, Hillary Clinton (Edie Falco) did stand by her man. 

Tuesday's episode reveals how Hillary reacted quite angrily to the illicit affair - and how the media reacted to the salacious news as well.

Hillary: Throughout the whole scandal, which Clinton had denied both publicly and privately, Hillary Clinton (Edie Falco) did stand by her man

The episode begins in 1992, with the introduction of Gennifer Flowers, who reveals she was Bill Clinton's lover for 12 years.

'I would have thought that after 12 years, he would have the guts to say I had an affair with this woman, and that's the truth, Flowers says.

Hillary is then seen meeting Bill in 1992, with Hillary saying they don't need to worry about the Gennifer Flowers story.

She tells everyone they need to 'destroy her credibility,' but they say it's too late for that.

They say they need Bill and Hillary together, and 60 Minutes offered a special taping after the Super Bowl.

She doesn't agree but they say she is the only people to put the American people's minds at ease.

One of the guys says they dropped 4 points overnight, but he admits 'You can save him, Hillary,' as she starts to relent.

She looks to Bill and says, 'You really think this is a good idea?' but he doesn't say anything. She says they aren't going to use the word affair, as Bill breathes easy.

The episode continues with the taping, with Bill adding how he first met Gennifer Flowers, saying she was a 'friendly acquaintance.'

Bill says that it was only when the tabloid offered money that Gennifer changed her story.

When the 60 Minutes reporter presses on troubles in the marriage, she says nobody would like every detail about their relationship out there.

The reporter insinuates there is an 'arrangement' between them, which seems to offend Bill and Hillary, who says if that's not enough, 'don't vote for him.'

Hillary is told in Los Angeles that the interview is a success, and it stabilized his numbers… but nobody likes Hillary now.

Tammy Wynette demands an apology for using the Stand By Your Man line, and Gennifer Flowers released a tape of a conversation with Bill.

Hillary tells the aide,' Do you know what the problem with most politicians is? No pain threshold,' before greeting a throng of admirers.

The episode cuts to January 1998, with Monica packing up her suitcase when she gets a phone call from a woman who works at the White House.

'You have to watch yourself. It's not just him, it's her too. They're trying to destroy you,' the woman says.

Monica's mother Marcia (Mira Sorvino) says she's preparing for her testimony as Monica heads back to California.

Hillary goes on Today with Matt Lauer, who asks if Bill has described his relationship with Monica with her.

'I think it's important to realize that the President has denied these accusations,' Hillary said.

She adds there is a larger problem that no one is discussing, revealing that Ken Starr's investigation was about a failed land deal, and now it's about Monica.

'I really have to say, there is a-a larger problem here that no one is discussing. And it concerns me. Ken Starr's investigation started out as an inquiry into a failed land deal. And now... What is it about? He has spent four years and $30 million doing everything possible to accuse my husband of a crime. And it isn't just Ken Starr, it's a whole operation,' she says.

Hillary asks Bill if he watched, as Bill says, he did and compliments her.

'I think Starr thought he was just messing with me on this.  Now he knows better. I don't know how you do it. You were incredible,' Bill says, as Hillary adds, 'Well, that'll teach him to f**k with us.'

Monica arrives at her father's house with Willam Ginsburg (Fred Melamed), giving him a big hug in front of a slew of paparazzi photographers.

Monica's father argues with William about protecting his daughter and Monica goes outside to relax.

The episode cuts to four months later, where a report claims Monica Lewinsky is the 'lynch pin' of Starr's (Dan Bakkehdal) investigation.

Mike Emmick (Colin Hicks) insists they should make a deal with Monica and Starr refuses to deal with Ginsburg.

When Emmick asks what else they can do, Starr says, 'We turn up the heat.'

Monica gets a call from Ginsburg, as she asks if there is good news, and he says, 'No, it is not.'

Monica returns to DC with her father and Ginsburg, who tells her that they can't arrest her yet.

They go inside and ask for a handwriting sample and fingerprints.

Ginsburg gives a statement to the press, saying Monica is being intimidated by Starr.

Ginsburg reveals on TV that he is stepping away, but revealing he wants to continue fighting against Starr's independent council.

As soon as Ginsburg is out, Starr smiles and says, 'Let's make a deal.'

Monica uses a disguise to meet with Sol Weisenberg (Jared Gertner) with her new lawyer who insists on immunity for everyone in the Lewinsky family.

She starts telling them everything about how she started at the White House in 1995, and during the government shutdown, they began a relationship.

The episode continues with news reports about terrorist bombings, with Clinton told in a briefing that it's Osama bin Laden.

'I wanna get rid of this guy,' Clinton says.

When he goes into his office, Bob (Christopher McDonald) is told that Monica Lewinsky signed an immunity deal with Starr.

'Just tell em I'll go in voluntarily,' he says, as Bob adds they're asking for a blood sample, and if there is any reason why they'd want to run a DNA test.

Monica is going through items that were gifts from the President, as they get to the infamous blue Gap dress.

Starr's team start practicing interrogation, when they say they don't even know if the DNA is a match… when they're told it's a match.

Clinton's lawyer asks what the extent of his relationship was with Miss Lewinsky, adding, 'on occasion there was intimate contact,' but insists that what happened under 'their definition' of sexual relations, what happened with him and Monica 'didn't count.'

'I told the truth,' Clinton says, but his lawyer asks if he's told The First Lady.

'I just can't bring myself to tell her,' he said, asking his lawyer to 'soften her up on the idea.'

David meets with Hillary, asking how she's feeling about tomorrow, hinting, 'what if there's more to this thing than you know.'

'Well, it took them seven months to get a deal with her,' and says she wouldn't believe a word she said.

'I appreciate you David and I am aware of my husband's reputation, but Bill has never lied to me about the things he's done. That's how we survive,' she says.

Bill goes into the bedroom as Hillary is asleep, contemplating.

The next morning Bill is sitting in a chair, having watched her sleep, apparently. She wakes up and he says, 'Hillary, I need to tell you something,' as she sits up.

'This thing with Monica Lewinsksy, is more serious than I made it out to be. I slipped up. She came on to me. I let it happen a couple of times,' he says.

'I should have told you, but we never had sex,' Clinton insists.

He says it was 'meaningless' but she says she lied to her.

'I went out in front of everyone and defended you and you lied to me,' Hillary says.

'You looked me in the eyes. You told me nothing happened. I can't look at you. Get out. Get out!' she says as he quietly leaves.

'And you better tell Chelsea before she finds out on CNN,' she says as he walks out of the bedroom.

He goes to his daily briefing, as he's told Osama bin Laden will be at this meeting, and it 'is our chance, Mister President.'

Sandy says it may not be a bad time to strike, politically, but when asked what they should do, Clinton says, 'Let's get him.'

Bill goes to meet Starr and his team, coming face to face seemingly for the first time, as they wryly smile at each other, these longtime adversaries coming face to face.

The Grand Jury testimony starts with the oath, where his testimony is being 'piped in' for members of the Grand Jury to watch.

Jackie asks if he believes he was truthful, and when Jackie asks if he's been intimate with Monica, the President says he has a statement which he thinks will clear things up.

He reveals that there was 'intimate contact' with Lewinsky, what happened between them did not comprise of 'sexual relations.'

They realize that every question they were going to asks him is, 'f***ing useless.'

Jackie keeps grilling Clinton about the definition of ‘sexual relations’ as he keeps wriggling his way around Jackie’s questions.

Emmick says, ‘For f**k’s sake he’s running circles around him,’ as Jackie is clearly frustrated with how this is happening.

Jackie asks if he was trying to mislead the judge when he gave his statement, Clinton issues an impassioned statement.

‘I did my best, sir, at this time. I did not know what I now know about this. A lot of other things were going on in my life. Did I want this come out? No. Was I embarrassed about it? Yes. Did I ask her to lie about it? No. I say to the grand jury, put yourself in my position. I am doing my best to cooperate. And protect myself, my family and my office. I am trying to tell the truth about what happened between Ms. Lewinsky and me. But this does not change the fact that the real reason that the Jones lawyers zeroed in on me in the first place was because this was a bogus lawsuit funded by my political enemies,’ Bill says.

Jackie excuses himself and goes to Starr, who says he has some questions, as Starr sits down.

Starr asks what exactly he meant by ‘intimate contact,’ when Starr asks about oral sex.

They run out of the agreed four hour time limit as Bill shakes Ken’s hand and says, ‘Have a good one, Ken.’

Hillary walks into the Oval Office where Bill and Sidney (Patrick Fischler) and press secretary Mike McCurry (Scott Michael Morgan) are going over their options.

Bill says that they should just say Starr’s investigation is a ‘bunch of bulls**t,’ when they see Hillary watching.

He asks her what she thinks he should say, and she coldly responds, ‘It’s your speech. You’re the President, I guess.’

Bill goes on TV and admits he had an inappropriate relationship with Monica Lewinsky, as both she and Hillary watch.

While Clinton, who was in his second term as President at the time, denied the allegations at first, more and more evidence came to light.

Such evidence included a semen-stained blue dress that Lewinsky had been encouraged to save without cleaning, by her one-time friend Linda Tripp. 

While Clinton continued to deny the affair, he ultimately came clean in August 1998, which lead to his impeachment.

Clinton was ultimately acquitted on both impeachment charges, and he ultimately served out the remainder of his term.
