Arsenal star Ben White and Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips share moment similar to Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski when pair caught sight of each other before Carabao Cup game

Ben White could not help but smile at his old teammate Kalvin Phillips when the pair went up against each other in the Carabao Cup.

Arsenal beat Leeds 2-0 to book their place in the quarter-final of the competition, with plenty of big names lining-up on either side.

White spent a season on loan at Leeds in their promotion winning campaign in 2019/20 and was a hugely popular figure.

The club wanted to sign him on a permanent deal but Brighton refused to sell and he stayed on the south coast for another season.

The Gunners won the race in the summer to sign the centre-back, paying £50million for his services.

White is good friends with the midfielder and the pair holidayed together in Mykonos after their Euro 2020 exploits.

On Tuesday night, as both teams were ready to get under way and took the knee, the camera showed the defender smiling as he caught sight of his England teammate.

It was very much reminiscent of the moment Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski shared in a game between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, which is now a well known GIF.

The pair are great friends, having played together, and a clip of them went viral on social media as they smiled at each other before a German Cup semi-final.

In the Carabao Cup clash at the Emirates, White was taken off after 55 minutes and was replaced by Calum Chambers, who went on to score instantly.

Manager Mikel Arteta allayed any fears that the defender would be out for any extended length of time.

“There is a bug going on,” said Arteta. “We lost Pablo (Mari) today as well as he wasn’t feeling great. Ben had it as well for the last day or two. He wasn’t feeling great, so we decided to take him off.”
