GUWAHATI: An elderly couple, aged 87 and 65 years, was found dead at their residence in the Beltola area of the city on Tuesday morning. It is suspected that were allegedly murdered by their caretaker for 20 years with a motive suspected to be related to their immovable properties. The couple is survived by two daughters. The eldest one, Manashi, is settled in London and the youngest, Sonali, in Mumbai. Both of them are married. This was the second murder in the city within a week. Nani Barua, a retired engineer, and Meena Barua, a retired teacher, lived alone in their house in one of the thickly populated residential areas of the city close to the state capital complex. The couple was found lying on a bed in their bedroom. Police said they have found injuries on their heads from sharp weapons. The incident took place on Monday night but came to light on Tuesday morning after the couple's caretaker Akash Choudhury informed the police claiming that he saw the bodies lying on bed around 7 am. After initial investigation, Guwahati Police picked up Akash, who was living in an outhouse in the couple's compound along with his family. Police said apart from some property documents, every other valuable, including cash, were found intact inside the house, which has led the investigators to suspect the property angle to the murder motive. After a day-long interrogation, police finally arrested Akash in the evening. Speaking to the media, Guwahati police commissioner Harmeet Singh said, "Akash Choudhury's involvement has been found in the case so far. He has been arrested." Based on Akash's statement, police have picked up two other persons, Satyendra Dhar Singh from Patharquarry and Paresh Choudhury from Barbari areas in the city. Both were being interrogated till the time of filing this report late evening.
