Tamil Nadu's new case tally is inching closer to the 1,000-mark with the state recording 1,090 fresh infections on Tuesday compared to 1,112 on Monday. At least 10 districts recorded fewer than 10 new cases.
At the end of day, after the state discharged 1,326 people from its Covid-19 registry, there were 12,540 people undergoing treatment for the viral infection. The 15 deaths reported on Tuesday took the total toll in the state to 36,048.
Chennai (141) and Coimbatore (128) continued to report more than 100 cases each, though both districts recorded a drop from their Monday tallies. Chennai reported 144 cases and Coimbatore 130 cases on Monday.
However, a dozen districts reported an increase in cases compared to their Monday numbers. The sharpest increase was reported in Tirunelveli. New cases in the district went up to 14 on Tuesday from 6 on Monday. Similarly, cases in
Vellore rose to 21 from 14. On the other hand, 24 districts reported fewer than 20 cases on Tuesday, and among them
Virudhunagar (2) and Ramanathapuram (2) reported the fewest cases, followed by Tirupattur (3) and Theni (3) .
Of the 15 deaths the state recorded on Tuesday, there were four from Nagapattinam and three from Thanjavur. Coimbatore, Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, Thiruvarur, Karur, Madurai,
Villupuram, and Ranipet reported one death each. All other districts, including Chennai, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram, reported zero deaths.
Nearly half the active cases in the state were recorded in six distritcs - Chennai (1,573), Coimbatore (1,381), Chengalpet (993), Erode (872), Tirupur (752) and Salem (608). With just 36 people under treatment for Covid-19, Perambalur had the fewest active cases.
Meanwhile, 1.4 lakh people took the vaccine on Tuesday, taking the dosage tally to 5.43 crore in government vaccination centres. Private hospitals have administered 26.43 lakh doses since May 1.
