NGT directs Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam to deposit Rs 1 crore as interim compensation with CPCB for environmental restoration
The National Green Tribunal has directed Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam to deposit interim compensation of Rs. 1 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which will be utilised for the restoration of the environment. "Pending assessment quantification of compensation, the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam may deposit interim compensation of Rs. 1 crore with the CPCB. The Nigam is free to recover the amount out of the salary of erring officers," the NGT said. An NGT bench headed by its chairperson, justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said that "the authorities have to be held accountable by way of compensation on the polluter pays principle and departmental action for their failure in breach of the constitutional obligation under the "Public Trust Doctrine", apart from liability for prosecution under the Criminal Law." Delhi hospitals are witnessing a surge in Dengue cases as the number of patients from the national capital and nearby areas, especially Uttar Pradesh, continue to go up. "A lot of younger patients are coming with dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever and a lot of them are unaware of the fact that they have dengue before. Once their IGG levels are being checked it gets revealed," said Dr Pooja Khosla, Senior Consultant in Department of medicine Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
