Imphal, October 25 2021: Condemnation poured in against the assault on Thoubal correspondent of 'Naharolgi Thoudang' Elangbam Rameshwor, who is also Thoubal District Working Journalists' Union vice president, by unidentified persons on Sunday morning.
In a release, Ukhrul District Working Journalists' Association (UDWJA) said that the act is viewed as attack on "freedom of expression" and must be condemned by every right-thinking citizen.
The association urged authorities concerned to take up the matter with urgency and book the culprits behind the attack on the scribe, and take immediate necessary action.
It further exhorted parties concerned to refrain from the culture of taking direct action on any working journalists over dissatisfaction in publication of any news and to take up any issues concerning the publication of news with the editors concerned first and settle the matter amicably through dialogue.
UDWJA also extended full moral support to the victim Rameshwor.
All Bishnupur District Working Journalists' Union (ABDWJU) too condemned the attack on the scribe, who has been working day and night for the people.
Such attacks should be considered as disrespecting the entire journalist community, it added.
While appealing to authorities concerned for taking up stringent actions against the miscreants, the union assured that it will support any activities taken up by Thoubal District Working Journalists' Union on the matter.
In another release, Manipur People's Democratic Front secretary Sapam Samungou decried the attack on Rameshwor.
Police station concerned should take up suo-moto case and register an FIR under section 109 and 307 of Indian Penal Code, he demanded.
Noting that attack, murder and torture of journalists are happening in underdeveloped countries, Samungou said that the state government should be held responsible for such attack in the state.
The government should also give compensation to the injured scribe, he added.
