The United Nations (UN) praised the progress made by Qatar in the field of sustainable economic development despite the sudden circumstances and challenges witnessed by countries worldwide in recent years. This came in the speech made by Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Rola Dashti, during the opening of the national workshop on promoting integrated development planning in Qatar, which began yesterday.
She pointed out that the best evidence of this progress in planning and sustainable development is the flexibility and response to change shown by Qatar, despite the sudden changes that turned the region upside down, perhaps the most severe of which was the (Covid-19) pandemic. He stressed that the prospects for the Qatari economy are promising, with growth estimates of about 6.7% for the year 2022, according to ESCWA estimates, supported by investments in infrastructure and services, spending on the human sector, youth support, education development and improving the economic and legal environment.
The UN official congratulated Qatar on the election of the Shura Council and the inauguration of its first ordinary session of the first legislative term, to enhance the process of popular participation in decision-making. She expressed the aspiration of ESCWA for more co-operation with the Planning and Statistics Authority to enhance the technical capacity of the staff in the apparatus and to provide advice to contribute to the development of policies that aim to achieve the developmental vision of Qatar.
