Delta detected in 60% of total mutated Goa COVID samples

Panaji: The directorate of health services (DHS) on Tuesday informed that reports of genome sequencing received from the Pune-based National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS) has revealed that 60 per cent of the state’s total 452 mutated samples of the second wave of the pandemic are of the highly contagious Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2 COVID-19 variant.

As per the data provided by the DHS, till date, Goa’s 452 samples have shown mutations of which 271 (59.96 per cent) are of Delta variant, 157 (34.73 per cent) are of sub-lineages of Delta variant, while 22 samples (4.87 per cent) tested positive for B.1.617.1 variant that has been designated as Kappa.

Only one sample each (0.22 per cent) from the state is of B.1.617.2.1/AY.1, also known as Delta Plus, and the Alpha variant, also known as lineage B.1.1.7.

The DHS said the data also includes the reports of 64 samples that were received last on October 18, 2021.

The DHS informed that a total of 47 samples’ sequencing failed, while reports of 362 samples are still awaited from the NCCS.
