Coronavirus Variants and Vaccinations, Coronavirus Active Cases in India Today News, October 26 Live Updates: The number of fresh Coronavirus infections has been steadily declining in India but the possibility of a third wave emerges with the detection of a new variant in the country. The Covid-19 situation in India is under control for the past 2 months. But, few states have started witnessing a surge in new Covid-19 cases in the post-festive week. West Bengal, Assam, and Himachal Pradesh reported up to 40% spike in new Covid-19 cases last week. However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday claimed that the fresh infections in the state are from mostly among those who have been fully vaccinated but their immunity after being administered both doses is not exceeding six months. West Bengal has in the last four days witnessed a sudden surge in the number of Covid-19 cases post-Durga Puja festivities.

The emergence of the new Delta ‘sub variant’ in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore further fuels the fear of the Covid-19 third wave in the country. Research regarding the new mutant is still in the initial phase. However, studies so far show that this mutant is far more transmissible than the Delta variant. The approaching winter season might make things even worse.

Despite large-scale vaccination, new cases are rising. Reason: People are dropping their guard after getting vaccinated; there is laxity in adhering to appropriate Covid protocols. The Bombay High Court said chances of Maharashtra witnessing a spike in cases was likely, especially during the festive season, since several citizens had stopped following safety protocols imposed by the government. India has been witnessing below 20,000 new Covid-19 cases for the past few days.

Meanwhile, India added 12,428 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, which is the lowest in 238 days, while the active cases declined to 1,63,816, according to data from the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday. With the fresh cases, India’s overall Covid-1 tally increased to 3,42,02,202, while the death toll climbed to 4,55,068 with 356 fresh fatalities, according to the data updated at 8 am. The daily rise in new Coronavirus infections has been below 30,000 for 31 straight days and less than 50,000 for 120 consecutive days now. The active cases now account for 0.49% of the total infections, the lowest since March 2020, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate improved to 98.18%, the highest since March 2020, the health ministry said.

Coronavirus Live Tracker: COVID-19 cases spike in Belgium; govt poised for action

Coronavirus indicators are shooting upward in Belgium, pushing the government on Tuesday to consider re-imposing some pandemic measures that it only relaxed a few weeks ago. Daily infections in the nation of 11 million increased 75% to reach 5,299 case on a daily basis last week. Hospitalizations have increased by 69% to reach 102 daily cases. Deaths have increased slightly, with an average of 13 a day. To turn around this trend, the government and regional officials are set to decide later Tuesday to boost measures again, although stopping well short of a going into a lockdown. Indications are that authorities are looking at increased mandatory use of face masks and virus passports. The urgency is such that the meeting has already been brought forward three days. Requirements for the use of masks and some other measures were only relaxed early this month, and the easing could be partly turned back. Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke, however, said that drastic restrictions were still out of the question. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: South Korea's GL Rapha certified to produce Sputnik COVID-19 vaccines

South Korean biotech firm GL Rapha has secured regulatory approval from Russia to produce and market the Sputnik family of coronavirus vaccines, the company and Russian sovereign fund RDIF said on Tuesday. The certification paves the way for the first overseas production of the shot to ease a supply shortage and allows GL Rapha to carry out the full production cycle, as opposed to other foreign manufacturers that rely on Russian-supplied ingredients. "This is the first time a foreign production partner of RDIF obtains a Russian GMP (good manufacturing practice) certificate," the two said in a joint statement.RDIF and GL Rapha have agreed to produce more than 150 million doses per year of Sputnik V. "In total, the existing RDIF contracts with international partners enable the annual production of more than 1 billion doses of the Sputnik V and Sputnik Light vaccines per year outside of Russia," the companies said. The company called it "the first step in our long-term partnership with the African Union," which has been outspoken about the need for many more COVID-19 vaccine doses. Africa and its 1.3 billion people remain the least-vaccinated region of the world against COVID-19, with just over 5 per cent fully vaccinated. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Russia's daily COVID deaths hit new record at 1,106

Russia on Tuesday reported 1,106 COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, the highest figure since the start of the pandemic, amid a surge in new cases that has prompted authorities to reimpose partial lockdown measures. The daily toll has hit new records in six of the past eight days. The state COVID-19 task force also reported 36,446 new infections, compared with 37,930 a day earlier. Russia will go into a nationwide workplace shutdown in the first week of November, and the capital Moscow will reimpose a partial lockdown from Oct. 28, with only essential shops like pharmacies and supermarkets allowed to remain open. Authorities have blamed the rising deaths and infections on slow vaccination rates. As an incentive, President Vladimir Putin has ordered that people who get injected should be given two paid days off work. (Reuters)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Campaign launched in Delhi to vaccinate devotees against Covid during Chhath Puja

Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday launched a special campaign for administration of Covid vaccines to devotees going to observe fast on Chhath festival post Diwali at Ibrahimpur village in North East Delhi's Burari area. He was accompanied by BJP MP Manoj Tiwari.  Later, Puri shared pictures of the launch and sought blessings for all from 'Chhathi Maiya' in a tweet in Bhojpuri. The celebration of Chhath at riverbanks, water bodies and temples was prohibited in view of COVID by Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in its order on September 30. However, the DDMA is expected to permit the festival at public places after its meeting on Wednesday. Tiwari, North East Delhi MP, who had strongly opposed the ban on Chhath, had on Tuesday announced the campaign to vaccinate "Chhathvratis" so that the festival is celebrated safely. Over 10,000 persons are to be administrated the vaccine across the city during the campaign. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: China urges faster COVID-19 testing amid latest outbreak

China is demanding faster and more accessible COVID-19 testing services in its latest effort to reinforce a zero-tolerance policy against the virus, even when cities have already scrambled to test millions in just a few days amid outbreaks. Frequent testing, and sometimes mass testing, is standard practice in China's containment of domestically transmitted outbreaks in the past year, but health authorities say testing services remain unsatisfactory in parts of China amid flare-ups. "Small clusters and sporadic infections have occurred in some areas, exposing problems such as the unreasonable locations of nucleic acid testing agencies, inconvenient services and delays in the returning of results," state media reported on Tuesday, citing the National Health Commission (NHC). China is facing a new wave of infections involving nearly 200 locally transmitted symptomatic cases in 12 provincial areas since Oct. 17. Many of the infected were from remote parts of northwest China without as much health resources as major cities. NHC said testing agencies should provide 24-hour services to the public and strive to have results within six hours for those who volunteer to be tested, according to state media reports. NHC said in September that cities with over 5 million people should have the capacity to test everyone within three days. While China is yet to approve self-testing kits for diagnosing COVID-19, swab tests that require professional labs to process samples are widely available. Local governments have recently cut prices of swab tests, with certain tests charging as little as 13 yuan ($2.00) in the Chinese capital of Beijing. (Reuters)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: New Zealand expands vaccine mandate to 40% of all workers

New Zealand's government said Tuesday it will expand a vaccine mandate to include thousands of workers who have close contact with their customers, including employees at restaurants, bars, gyms and hair salons. The changes will mean that about 40% of all New Zealand workers will need to get fully vaccinated against the coronavirus or risk losing their jobs, up from about 15% previously. Speaking with reporters, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she didn't believe the new rules were an overreach of government power. "This requirement means staff and customers are treated equally and it will play a big part in helping to minimize the spread of the virus in the highest-risk venues by reducing the potential for COVID to enter the business in the first place," Ardern said. Workers who had previously been told they needed to get their shots included teachers and health care professionals. Tuesday's announcement came just a few days after the government set a target of getting 90% of people aged 12 and over fully vaccinated in order to end the cycle of lockdowns. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Tracker:Assam eases Covid restrictions as situation improves

Assam eased COVID-related restrictions on Tuesday, limiting the night curfew from 11 pm to 5 am, in view of the improvement of the situation in the state, officials said. Issuing a new set of guidelines, Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua said 31 per cent of the eligible population of the state have been fully vaccinated, while 95 per cent got their first dose. "The situation of COVID-19 in the state has been reviewed and the overall COVID scenario in the state has further improved," said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) order, which came into effect immediately. The daily new cases are hovering between 300 and 400, mostly reported from the urban and peri-urban areas, and most of the districts are reporting less than 10 cases per day for the last four-five weeks, it added. The ASDMA order relaxed the night curfew, which will be from 11 pm to 5 am, instead of starting at 10 pm earlier. The new guidelines, however, cut the number of people attending weddings to a maximum of 50 single-dose vaccinated persons from 200 fully vaccinated persons, in the earlier order issued on October 1. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Hong Kong to tighten COVID-19 rules, seeks to open to China

Hong Kong will tighten COVID-19 restrictions despite a lack of local outbreaks to better align with China's policies and increase chances of quarantine-free travel between the territory and mainland, leader Carrie Lam said Tuesday. It will step up contact tracing, such as requiring the use of its LeaveHomeSafe app in government premises to record the coming and going of visitors. It will also tighten quarantine rules to exempt only emergency workers or those in essential industries such as logistics. Currently, those exempt from quarantine include airline crew, banking and insurance executives, directors of public companies, as well as crew members on cargo and passenger ships, among others. Hong Kong has not had a major local outbreak since the beginning of the year, with virtually no local transmission in recent months. But it is largely closed to international travel, and travelers from countries deemed high-risk such as the U.S. must serve a 21-day quarantine. Authorities say resuming quarantine-free travel with the mainland is the top priority, compared to reopening travel internationally. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: US to lift all travel restrictions for fully vaccinated incoming foreign nationals from November 8, says White House

The US will lift all restrictions for fully vaccinated international travellers, including from India, from November 8 but they will have to show proof of a negative coronavirus test before boarding a flight to the country, the White House has announced. The updated travel guidelines issued on Monday also include new protocols around testing. To further strengthen protections, unvaccinated travellers - whether US Citizens, lawful permanent residents (LPRs), or the small number of accepted unvaccinated foreign nationals - will now need to test within one day of departure. "Under this new international air travel system, foreign nationals will need to be fully vaccinated, in order to fly to the United States. The new system also includes enhanced testing requirements, strengthened contact tracing, as well as masking. These are strict safety protocols that follow the science and public health to enhance the safety of Americans here at home, and the safety of international air travel," a senior administration official told reporters. Beginning November 8, non-citizen, non-immigrant air travellers to the United States will be required to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination status prior to boarding an airplane to fly to the US, with only limited exceptions, the official said. With this, the United States will lift all travel restrictions specific to all countries and regions. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Facebook, YouTube take down Bolsonaro video over false vaccine claim

Facebook and YouTube have removed from their platforms a video by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in which the far-right leader made a false claim that COVID-19 vaccines were linked with developing AIDS. Both Facebook and Alphabet Inc's YouTube said the video, which was recorded on Thursday, violated their policies. "Our policies don't allow claims that COVID-19 vaccines kill or seriously harm people," a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement on Monday. YouTube confirmed that it had taken the same step later in the day. "We removed a video from Jair Bolsonaro's channel for violating our medical disinformation policy regarding COVID-19for alleging that vaccines don't reduce the risk of contracting the disease and that they cause other infectious diseases," YouTube said in a statement. Coronavirus Live Tracker: African Union to buy up to 110 million Moderna COVID-19 vaccines -officials

The African Union (AU) intends to buy up to 110 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna Inc in an arrangement brokered in part by the White House, which will defer delivery of some doses intended for the United States to facilitate the deal, officials told Reuters. The AU's doses will be delivered over the coming months, with 15 million arriving before the end of 2021, 35 million in the first quarter of next year and up to 60 million in the second quarter. "This is important as it allows us to increase the number of vaccines available immediately," AU coronavirus envoy Strive Masiyiwa said in an email. "We urge other vaccine producing countries to follow the lead of the (U.S. government) and give us similar access to buy this and other vaccines. "Masiyiwa said the Moderna purchase represented the first time the 55-member AU had secured vaccines that were not fully produced in Africa. The new shipments of vaccine are well below what Africa needs to vaccinate its 1.3 billion people, who have had far less access to the life-saving vaccines than more prosperous parts of the world. Getting access to Moderna vaccines adds diversity to the AU's vaccine supply with different storage requirements. The Biden administration is deferring delivery of 33 million doses it had bought from Moderna to give the AU its "spot in line" to make a purchase, according to Natalie Quillian, the White House's deputy coordinator for COVID-19 response. "We are grateful to have helped negotiate this encouraging step forward between Moderna and the African Union that will significantly expand access to vaccines on the continent in the near-term," Quillian said. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Bayern star Joshua Kimmich at center of COVID vaccine debate

Bayern Munich soccer star Joshua Kimmich has found himself at the center of a debate in Germany over the merits of vaccination against the coronavirus. The 26-year-old Kimmich, tipped as a future Germany captain for his leadership qualities, confirmed over the weekend that he is yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19 because of his own concerns about "a lack of long-term studies" into the effects of the vaccines. Kimmich said he was still considering it and that it was "very possible that I will get vaccinated." His comments were welcomed by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has consistently opposed measures against the coronavirus, while they led to dismay among those who are banking on vaccines as a route back toward normalcy at a time when infection rates are climbing again in Germany. "The more people who are vaccinated, the less dangerous the virus will be," Leipzig's American coach Jesse Marsch said Monday. Germany's public health institute reported that just over 55 million people, or 66.2 percent of the population, were fully vaccinated. Children under 12 years old are not being vaccinated. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Covid cases falling, but trouble signs arise as winter looms

Tumbling COVID-19 case counts have some schools around the U.S. considering relaxing their mask rules, but deaths nationally have been ticking up over the past few weeks, some rural hospitals are showing signs of strain, and cold weather is setting in. The number of new cases nationally has been plummeting since the delta surge peaked in mid-September. The U.S. is averaging about 73,000 new cases per day, dramatically lower than the 173,000 recorded on Sept. 13. And the number of Americans in the hospital with COVID-19 has plummeted by about half to around 47,000 since early September. In Florida, Miami-Dade County's mask mandate could be loosened  by the end of October if the encouraging numbers continue, and nearby Broward County will discuss relaxing its requirement on Tuesday. The superintendent in metro Atlanta said he will consider waiving mask requirements at individual schools. A high school outside Boston became the first in Massachusetts to make masks optional after it hit a state vaccination threshold. With about 95% of eligible people at Hopkinton High inoculated, school leaders voted  to allow vaccinated students and staff to go maskless for a three-week trial period starting Nov. 1. Still, there are some troubling indicators, including the onset of cold weather, which sends people indoors, where the virus can more easily spread. With required mask use reduced in much of the U.S., the University of Washington's influential COVID-19 forecasting model is predicting increasing infections and hospitalizations in November. Also, COVID-19 deaths per day have begun to creep back up again after a decline that started in late September. Deaths are running at about 1,700 per day, up from close to 1,500 two weeks ago. (AP)
