Australian Police Seize Nissan Silvia After Driver Filmed Hooning

Police in Australia have seized a modified Nissan Silvia after it was filmed hooning in an industrial area in Caloundra.

As you can see in the video released by police that contains footage from witnesses, the car was caught drifting and kicking up an impressive amount of tire smoke. This apparently went on for a bit as a couple of people gathered to cheer the driver on.

Police were tipped off about the incident and officials noted an investigation by the Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol resulted in a search warrant being executed at a nearby Caloundra address. The car was found at that location and seized by authorities.

Furthermore, a 39 year old man was charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle and one count of “wilful damage.” The latter charge seems to stem from the tire marks as police noted the driver conducted “numerous burnouts, causing damage to the road.”

The man is slated to appear in court next month and authorities said he is the first person to be charged on the Sunshine Coast under new anti-hooning legislation that was passed in April. The law holds the registered owner of a vehicle responsible for any hoonage that occurs and “if the owner of a vehicle claims they weren’t driving at the time of the offence, it will be up to them to prove it.”

That sounds like guilty until proven innocent, but authorities contend the “legislation makes it easier for police to take enforcement action against mass gatherings of hoons.”
