MLA Rameshwor pitches for saving Thang-Ta

Imphal, October 25 2021: Keirao MLA and State Planning Board deputy chairman L Rameshwor has stressed the need for collective effort to save the indigenous martial art form, Thang-Ta from possible extinction.
In his address as the chief guest during the 63rd foundation day celebration of Huiyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association, Irilbung at its complex on Sunday, Rameshwor said that cooperation and contribution of the people is very much needed in promoting Thang-Ta, which was utilised by forefathers of the land in fighting adversary forces including the mighty British to keep intact the sovereign status of Manipur.
The government of Manipur has taken up various steps to save and promote Thang-Ta by earmarking fund iii the state budget, L Rameshwor said, adding that playing Thang-Ta helps a person to become discipline and honourable, apart from keeping him/her physically fit and healthy.
While recalling that he too practiced Thang-Ta during her youthful days, the MLA said that most of the Thang Ta players do not consume bad foods and think positively and playing this indigenous martial art will help in building a good and prosperous society.
Huiyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association principal and director K Sanathoi said that Thang-Ta martial art form has long been used by Manipuri forefathers not only in battles but also in religious activities.
The ancestors cautiously preserved this martial'art for many years back and the British even banned this art form due to fear of waging war using this martial art form.
After prolonged ban, the indigenous martial art form has now been revived with concerted efforts of Gurus and elders, he added.
