TO THE EDITOR:
NHTSA needs to catch up ("Tesla risks undermining Autopilot by updating without a recall," autonews.com, Oct. 14).
Why should they look to punish Tesla for doing something faster than they can figure out what happened? New times, new technology, new ways of responding. If Tesla has the ability to fix something in real time, why not? Isn't that making people safer sooner rather than later? The technology is there now! It will take NHTSA 100 times longer to figure out what happened than the time it took Tesla to send the over-the-air update.
In life, they say there are three types of people: Those that make it happen, those that watch it happen and those that say, "What the heck just happened?" NHTSA qualifies for two out of the three.
Good job to Tesla for getting updates out in real time and not waiting for the government bureaucracy to figure out something they don't understand.
