Bathinda, October 25

Farmers gathered in large numbers in front of Bathinda district administrative complex on Monday to demand compensation for cotton crops lost to pink bollworm attack this summer.

Farmers have been demanding a compensation of Rs 60,000 per acre.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) leaders Shingara Singh Mann and Kaka Singh Kotra, who led the protesters, said Monday’s protest was because of the administration’s lack of response to their demand.

“We’d staged a protest outside Finance Minister Manpreet Badal’s from September to 18 but the state government has so far been unresponsive to our demands. So we’re now gheraoing the district administrative complex,” the leaders said.

Protesters closed the gates to the complex and said they would not budge until their demands are met.
