Heart flown from Kochi, saves the life of 51-year-old man

Heart harvested from a brain-dead person in Kochi was flown to Chennai airport in 1 hour 5 mins time and transported to Rela Hospital through a green corridor in less than 5 minutes for a heart transplant surgery. The recipient, a 51-year-old male, working for a private IT company in Chennai was diagnosed with Dilated Cardio Myopathy (DCM). He had been on a organ registry waiting list since Feb 2021.

Madras high court orders postponement of KVPY exam over regional language issue

The Madras high court on Monday ordered postponement of the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) aptitude test which was scheduled to be conducted on November 7. Electrician, mechanic die in car crash

Two people in their early 20s were killed on the spot killed when their car rammed into a tree in the district, police said on Monday.According to the police, Bhoopathy, an electrician, and Manickkam, a mechanic, were on Sunday proceeding to Tiruppur from Erode when the electrician, who was driving the car lost control over it and the vehicle hit a roadside tree near Kannammapuram village. Under the impact, the two died on the spot, the police said. The bodies of the two were sent for a postmortem and investigations on, the police added.

Fire safety: Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority plans remain on paper

A fire accident on the 19th floor of a high-rise in Mumbai recently has turned the spotlight on multi-storeyed buildings (MSB) that have failed to adhere to fire safety norms in the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA). While the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority’s (CMDA) official portal states that 43 MSBs have no objection certificates (NOC) pending with the department of fire and rescue services, activists fighting against building violations say that several commercial structures encroach on setback spaces hindering movement of fire tenders during emergencies. Tamil Nadu truck operators want fuel prices to be brought under GST

Diesel prices crossing Rs 100-mark in Tamil Nadu has left truck owners and fleet operators a worried lot and a large number of trucks in Namakkal district, considered as the truck capital of South India, are not plying. Namakkal has an estimated 5 lakh trucks in the district and according to truck owners and fleet operators, around 35 per cent of them are not being plied. The truck owners association wants both the Central and state governments to include fuel prices under the GST and the DMK government to honour its promise of reducing the diesel price by Rs 4 per litre. Verizon to distribute science kits to kids

Furthering the cause of STEM education at the grass-root level, a non-profit organisation India Literacy Project (ILP), with the support of Verizon India, has facilitated the distribution of ‘science lab in a box’ kits to 60 government-run schools in Tamil Nadu and Telangana. More than 12,000 children from 30 government higher secondary schools in Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu and over 7,000 students from 30 government schools in Wanaparthy district, Telangana, will benefit from these kits. The Tamil and Telugu versions of the science kit manual and Tamil and Telugu digital online opensource content for use by the government school teachers were also released during an event.

Cars24 hub coming up near Tiruvallur

Chennai is one of the seven mega refurbishment labs (MRL) to be set up by online used car unicorn Cars24. These company-owned centres will be set up on 35-acre plots in metros to provide buyers “access to high quality used cars coupled with warranty,” said Cars24 in a statement. Apart from Chennai, MRLs will be set up in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune. The Chennai facility, which will come up near Tiruvallur, will become operational in the first phase starting October 2021 along with Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Around 20,000 cars a month will be refurbished at these MRLs and upwards of 1,500 auto workshop jobs will be created. Kunal Mundra, CEO, Cars India, CARS24, said, “The quality of used cars is the most important requirement for buyers. This requires significant refurbishment investment and effort. Hence to cater to these consumer needs, we are setting up India’s largest refurbishment facilities.”

1st yr engineering classes from today

More than 400 engineering colleges in the state will begin classes for more than 95,000 students, who have joined through engineering counselling, from Monday. Anna University's College of Engineering, Guindy, Madras Institute of Technology and Alagappa College of Technology have released the time slots for enrolling the students from Monday. These campuses will conduct campus tours, counselling and games during the induction programme this year. As per the academic schedule, the induction programme will be conducted in physical mode at the university while the theory classes will be conducted in online mode. The semester for university departments will begin with an induction programme on November 1 and end on March 1. Most of the colleges have planned physical induction programmes for the students.

IIT M-incubated startup to build India’s 1st pvt small satellite launch vehicle

What could be a bigger shot in the arm for a space tech startup than getting an opportunity to test its systems at the country’s national space agency? For Agnikul Cosmos, the association with the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has taken it closer to launching its own rocket. The IIT M-incubated startup will build India’s first private small satellite launch vehicle, Agnibaan, that can carry up to 100kg of payload to low-earth orbits. Tiruvarur: 2 arrested with ‘whale vomit’ worth Rs 8 crore

Forest department officials in Tiruvarur seized 8kg of ambergris or whale vomit worth Rs 8 crore from two people near Muthupettai on Saturday night. Ambergris is a waxy substance secreted from the intestine of sperm whales and is used in perfume manufacture, but its possession and sale are banned in India under the Wildlife Protection Act. District forest officials said they laid a trap based on a tip that a gang was trying to sell the banned substance in local as well as international markets. Read more here

During the mega vaccination drive held on Saturday through 50,000 camps across the state, 23.27 lakh people received the jabs, he said, adding 14.68 lakh of them received first dose while 8.59 lakh received second dose.

Meanwhile, minister for medical and family welfare Ma Subramanian said the total number of people who were administered single dose touched 69 per cent in Tamil Nadu while 29 per cent of the population has received double doses following the sixth mega vaccination camp held on Saturday.
