Navi Mumbai Metro (NMM) rail network: Everything you need to know

Mentioned in detail in this article is all about the Navi Mumbai Metro, along with the route, stations and map

Navi Mumbai, built as a satellite city for Mumbai, has developed by leaps and bounds in the last decade. Today, each and every node, both, old and newer ones, that are opening up in Navi Mumbai, are being developed strategically with focus on providing the people with state-of-the-art social and physical infrastructure. For example, Navi Mumbai is home to India’s first and largest transit-oriented development (TOD) at Seawoods Darave. The next milestone to be achieved by this satellite city is operations of the Navi Mumbai Metro (NMM), which promises excellent connectivity to its different nodes. By 2027, the Navi Mumbai Metro is expected to serve one lakh passengers per day. To set the ball rolling, trial runs on the Navi Mumbai metro started from August 28, 2021.

Navi Mumbai Metro objective

To ease the pressure on the railway network and the growing traffic on the road, there was a need to introduce a new mode of public transport that would establish connectivity to all Navi Mumbai residential nodes. As a result, the Navi Mumbai metro was designed with five lines, covering a distance of 106.4 kms. This is not only an important transportation need for the smart city, it will also boost the city’s economic growth.

Navi Mumbai Metro rail network

The Maharashtra government authorised City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) as the implementing agency for the construction, maintenance and operation of the Navi Mumbai Metro for Corridor-1 that will be developed in three phases. The foundation stone for the Navi Mumbai metro rail project was laid on May 1, 2011. The Corridor-1 route includes Belapur, Kharghar, Pendhar, Kalamboli and Khandeshwar and is planned to be extended to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Corridor-1 is based on a detailed project report made by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the Navi Mumbai Metro Rail Project.

Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1

Line-1 will cover a total of 23.4 kms and will include 20 metro stations. Starting from Belapur, the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 will terminate at the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Navi Mumbai Metro Phase 1 from Belapur to Pendhar received ‘Dynamic Clearance Certificate’ from the central Ministry of Telecommunications. The next step for the Navi Mumbai Metro, is to proceed with commercial operating testing under the purview of the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

Navi Mumbai Metro RSDO certified

The Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) Lucknow has awarded the interim speed certificate to CIDCO’s Navi Mumbai Metro for the Metro Line-1, Phase 1 that is from Belapur to Pendhar. The RDSO certificate was granted on October 20, 2021 for the route between stations 7 and 11 of the Navi Mumbai Metro. The certificate was granted after successful trials and reviews of test certificates and a large number of documents showing adherence to the RDSO safety guidelines.

“As the trials conducted on the Metro Line-1 were successful, the RDSO granted the Interim Speed Certificate. This allows the Navi Mumbai Metro to deploy the trains at maximum operational speed. This marks an important milestone for the Navi Mumbai Metro. Now we are waiting for CCRS approvals to commence operations,” Sanjay Mukherjee, VC-MD, CIDCO, said.
