Primary school children will go to school from Monday after a gap of nearly 18 months. The low positivity rate and negligible fatality rate among children in the 0-9 age group are seen as the reasons behind this move.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 19,93,532 children in the age group of 0-9 have tested positive in Karnataka. The fatality rate is 0.1 per cent. In the age group of 10-19 years, 2,32,900 tested positive and 94 died. The fatality rate is the lowest in the 10-19 age group at 0.04 per cent.
Classroom study for grades 6 to 12 started last month. In Mysuru, 82 per cent class 6-10 students are attending school now. “The number is expected to rise as we have started midday meals,” officials in department of public instruction said. “There is no Covid-19 outbreak in schools since the start of physical classes. There’s no cause for worry,” said Chandrashekar Nuggi, general secretary, Government Teachers’ Association.
Mysuru district surveillance officer Dr T Shivaprasad said: “The majority of the 18-plus population is now immunised. Adding to this, children have immunity against this infection.”
Vishal R, commissioner, DPI, said: “For 15 days, we are working on reopening schools for primary school children up to class 5. We have sensitised all stakeholders on making schools safe for kids. Sero surveys have revealed over 70 per cent kids have developed antibodies.”
