Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced plans Sunday to "hopefully sign" legislation to provide a $5,000 bonus to police officers who relocate to Florida in order to avoid COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
Why it matters: The governor's pledge during an appearance on Fox News comes amid escalating tensions with the Biden administration over its upcoming vaccine requirement for federal workers.

The big picture: DeSantis vowed to have the legislation introduced at a special session of the state legislature that he previously announced would combat coronavirus vaccine mandates enacted by businesses and "provide protections for employees," which he's aiming to take place next month.
What he's saying: "We're actually actively working to recruit out-of-state law enforcement, because we do have needs in our police and our sheriff's departments," DeSantis said on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.
"So in the next legislative session, I'm going to hopefully sign legislation that gives a $5,000 bonus to any out-of-state law enforcement that relocates in Florida," he continued.
"So NYPD, Minneapolis, Seattle, if you're not being treated well, we will treat you better here. You can fill important needs for us, and we will compensate you."
