Tyson Fury’s victory over Deontay Wilder took the Gypsy King’s already rich legacy to new heights.
The pair put on an all-time classic heavyweight title fight in Las Vegas and many might argue that Fury has taken his game to new levels since teaming up with SugarHill Steward of the Kronk Gym.
Fury originally teamed up with Ben Davison when he began his comeback to boxing back in 2018, but ahead of the second Wilder fight, Fury decided to go in a different direction and team up with someone he met a long time ago.
Fury had trained at the Kronk Gym over a decade before and once he teamed up with Steward, he took the WBC title from Wilder.
Speaking after the trilogy fight between Fury and Wilder, former undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis heaped praise on Emmanuel’s nephew and now head trainer of Kronk gym, SugarHill.
“Kronk in the house! Emmanuel Stewart would be so proud right now. It’s unbelievable, this man did a fantastic job,” Lewis said.
The praise left SugarHill speechless and it’s easy to see why – his uncle was a true legend.
Steward trained 43 world champions in a celebrated career, including Lewis from 1994 to 2004.
“Manny always told me I was the best, but the truth is, he was the best and I’m grateful, privileged and honoured to be counted among his many historic successes.
“Manny has helped me get through some of the biggest fights in my career and I only regret that I couldn’t return the favour and see him through his biggest fight.”
Fury and SugarHill now have that same bond and the Gypsy King was full of praise for his trainer after his epic victory over Wilder to complete the trilogy
“I need to thank my trainer. At the end there he told me, ‘get your jab working, only the big dogs pull it out late on,” he said after the fight.
“It was edge of the seat stuff and could’ve gone either way. SugarHill pushed me to knock him out late.”
