For your haunting pleasure: a list of ideas for pop culture costumes that will thrill—without the bloodshed that usually comes with an episode of Squid Game. How about pairing a silky black slip with faux fur and a red lip à la Cruella? Emma Stone’s devilish performance of the young Disney villain stiletto-ing her way up the fashion totem pole is enough to inspire any monochromatic wardrobe. Or take inspiration from this year’s reboots and comebacks—Gossip Girl, Friends or Bennifer, who ignited our Instagram by rekindling their early 2000s romance. There’s plenty of fashion nostalgia to fuel your Halloween dress at your next ghoulish gathering. In no particular order, here are 17 last-minute costume ideas to inspire your Halloween ensemble.

Wanna play a Squid Game?

Chances are the melodic tones of “Red Light, Green Light” have been playing in your head for the past few weeks. You can thank Netflix’s most-watched series ever, Squid Game, for the catchy tune and unfiltered terror. The South Korean thriller has been watched by 111 million users across the globe and counting. In terms of sartorial inspiration, we have the players, clad in green tracksuits with white numbers emblazoned on the jackets, and the heartless “VIPs,” in menacing crystal animal masks and silk robes. You could also come dressed to kill as Younghee, the childhood literary character turned deathly robot with her unassuming pigtails and orange smock.

Seeing spots with Cruella
Disney

“Cruella de Vil, Cruella de Vil, if she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will.” Your costume should be just as menacing as her moniker. The Disney film set the record straight on the villainess’s backstory, serving equal parts style and intrigue (not to mention a killer soundtrack). Play around with various black-on-black ensembles—adding only white and red accents throughout. Make sure to accessorise your look with Cruella’s trademark cackle.

Like it or not, the addictive video app has probably infiltrated your screen time budget this year. The catchy song clips, choreographed dances and microwavable salmon recipe (thank you Emily Mariko) are just some ideas begging to be worn. #CEOOF is a hashtag with a treasure trove of content to choose from. Give yourself a promotion and dress for the job you want.

Bernie in Burton

Lest we forget: the man, the myth, the meme. When Vermont senator Bernie Sanders wore his Burton jacket and hand-knitted gloves at President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s inauguration ceremony, he made quite the fashion statement. The unassuming look is both practical and easy to replicate. Pair a light brown puffer coat with knitted gloves and voila, you have one of the most recognised looks of 2021.

Free Britney

Newly engaged to longtime boyfriend Sam Asghari, the pop star has made strides in reclaiming her own independence this year, with an army of fans cheering her every step of the way. The release of Netflix’s documentary, Britney vs. Spears, cast light on the shadows of her 13-year long conservatorship. Most recently, Spears announced on Instagram the prospect of writing a book to tell her story. Take inspiration from her legendary stage looks to show support.

When news spread of the couple’s rekindled romance via an Instagram post, it’s fair to say the internet was buzzing. Celebrate their love with style. Hearkening back to their early 2000s romance, draw inspiration from their mobster film Gigli. Though it met with mixed reviews upon release, the film serves as a time capsule of the couple’s budding relationship.

XOXO, Gossip Girl

Our favorite Upper East Siders are once again fashionably gracing our television screens, in HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot. Chuck, Serena, Blair and Lonely Boy have all moved on but in their place, a fresh new cast is carrying the torch as Manhattan’s elite. There’s no time like the present to dust off your school uniform or punky tartan skirt to reimagine a Constance Billard–St. Jude’s School dress code.

And Just Like That...

When Carrie Bradshaw signed off her laptop for the last time all those years ago, we’d always wonder what she’d be up to right about now—and more importantly, what she’d be wearing. HBO Max is reawakening the city girl in us all with a miniseries, dubbed And Just Like That... Serving your best Charlotte, Samantha, Miranda or Carrie this Halloween is the perfect way to live out your '90s sitcom fantasy, puns and all.

Friends reunion

After a nearly two-decade hiatus, the beloved sitcom Friends returned to our screens for their 25th anniversary. Fan favorites Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer picked up right where they left off, courtesy of HBO Max. Aptly named “The One Where They Get Back Together,” the first episode of the reboot oozes ’90s nostalgia. Bring back Rachel Green’s lob or Phoebe Buffay’s cafe-inspired look—bonus points if you have a guitar and the guts to sing “Smelly Cat.”

A show about a witch brainwashing a small town into thinking they’re living out an endless cycle of television tropes, while simultaneously fighting off the evil misdoings of Agatha Harkness: I’m out of breath just thinking about it. Marvel Comics’ fever dream of a series, which premiered on Disney+ in January, stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda (a.k.a. Scarlet Witch) and Paul Bettany as her resurrected lover, Vision. There are plenty of sci-fi moments to justify any witchy outfits you pull from your closet.

Another Marvel Comics superhero manifesto, this one starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, tells the story of Russian spies and the horrors they endured becoming lethal femmes fatales. Black Widow uncovers the unbreakable bond between sisters and your attire should follow suit—lethal and full of venom.

RIP: Keeping Up With the Kardashians

When the Kardashians announced they would be leaving behind Keeping Up With the Kardashians, it came as a shock. The series ran for 20 seasons and is considered the longest-running reality show in the U.S. The real-life character arcs have evolved along with their sense of style. Go Kardashian retro for your costume with leopard print and platform heels circa 2007. The reality stars’ fashion sense is one for the books.

Megan Fox’s barely-there dress

Recreating Megan Fox’s “naked dress” from the MTV VMAs is not for the faint of heart. Fox opted for daring over demure in a Mugler stunner that turned red carpet tradition on its head. Embrace your physique in a similar fashion. Reach for that dress in the back of your closet you’re too nervous to wear on an ordinary day and go bold with nudes.

When “Drivers License” took over playlists in early January, we couldn’t help but fall for Olivia Rodrigo’s lovesick lyricism. Shortly thereafter her bluesy teenage album, Sour, was released. From then on, you could barely walk into a grocery store without being reminded of your own past heartbreaks. Buy a package of stickers and recreate Rodrigo’s girlie album cover. Or imitate her “Good 4 U” music video by donning a cheerleading outfit and glossy latex gloves.

Kim Kardashian’s Saturday Night Live debut brought shock and awe—both in acting and in attire. The aspiring lawyer, mother, model, actress, American media personality and businesswoman wore a neon pink Balenciaga look to deliver a monologue that left the public reeling. Who knew Kim K could land comedic punchlines with such grace? For your costume, dress in head-to-toe flamingo pink.
