90% of Southern Railway’s mail, express trains back on

CHENNAI: Southern Railway has resumed 643 of its 675 suburban trains and 90% of mail and express trains in Chennai division.
At the 66th railway week celebrations, Chennai divisional railway manager Ganesh said the division did well on freight loading and also installed passenger amenities during the pandemic.
The division provided escalator at Chennai Egmore, Tambaram, Tiruvallur, Mambalam and Arakkonam, new foot over-bridge at Ambattur, GPS clocks at 51 stations, auto announcement system at 19 stations and free emergency medical centre at Chengalpet and Tambaram stations apart from Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Katpadi and Jolarpettai stations and 36 new catering units including at Moore Market Complex and Chennai Egmore railway stations.
On the freight front, 7.819 million tonnes of goods were loaded in 2020-21 and 4.454 million tonnes loaded till September, he said. “The corresponding revenue during these periods were Rs 1,407 crore and Rs 1,175 crore,” he added.
He distributed awards to 19 gazetted officers, 485 non-gazetted staff and 48 group awards for meritorious performance during the function.
